Never forget that this is the greatest country the world has ever known.

JACKSON, Mich. -- As the war on terrorism continues and as war with Iraq appears to loom ominously in the not so distant future, Americans must be equally vigilant to remain thankful that we live in the greatest country the world has ever known.

The Arabs basically inherited and, unlike the barbarian west, failed to destroy the existing records from the Greek, Egyptian, Roman, and Persian periods.

While western Europe (except for Ireland) was conquered by pagan barbarians, resulting in the loss of much of what defines civilization, items like the writings of Aristotle, Plato, Socrates, and the mathematics already developed by the Persians and Greeks were preserved and translated into Arabic. Those Arabic texts later made their way via Andalusia (Spain) into western Europe and helped to spawn the Renaissance.

In other words, they transmitted what had already been created but for a time lost by the Europeans. Their original contributions were minimal. Since those times (e.g. in the last 500 years) they have contributed nothing and more recently have done their best to destroy anything which the rest of the world might describe as civilized.

It is true that for a time (the 700's to the 1600's AD) urban life and culture in the regions controled by Muslims was more advanced in many ways than in Europe. This, however, had much more to do with the after effects of the fall of the west under the barbarian hordes and what we now call the "Dark Ages" than anything the Arabs can take direct credit for.

. I was pretty impressed with his viewpoints and his charity works that further the conservative cause.

I am with you. They are the lords of nothing but sand. And yet it is the culture of the West that has allowed the development of the kind of minds that can take but one grain of that sand and create something such as the silicon microchip. I've had two predominant heroes in rock & roll: Ted & Frank Zappa. They couldn't be more opposed, politically, but both are/were outspoken and candid, and unafraid of criticism of their respective positions. And mighty entertaining to listen to, both on the stage and in the mic.

And that was before they became Muslim. Arabs once had accomplishments but they've chosen to return to a more barbaric, primitive lifestyle.

I think if you dig into the history there, they mostly carried it from their Hindu conquests to the West. Or was that just the concept of Arabic numerals? Perhaps someone more knowledgeable can comment.

A quick search on the history of algebra seems to confirm that it did not originate with the arabs, but instead is merely another acquired technology. I had always believed that the arabs were largely responsible for the branch of mathematics we call algebra, having been taught that in school.

I have to say that it "un-astonishes" me to discover this - that feeling you get when an apparent contradiction turns out to be based on a false premise.

So, in the last 500 years, there are no contributions that I can think of except possibly hijacking, but even that is just the combination of piracy (a long standing arab tradition) and the Trojan Horse ploy.

My advice is to avoid these people. They will always gravitate towards the negative. Take it from an old, cocky rock 'n' roll guitar player whose God-given senses remain finely tuned: America's best days are in front of us.

Okay, nothing to contribute to the betterment of mankind from any Arab nation in the last 500 yrs. Well, they did move to Israel enmass to work for the Jews when they developed their prosperous economy there. Anything that contributed to the betterment of mankind from a Communist or socialist nation?

Don't feel bad. I went through three years of a college education in Middle Eastern history with a minor in Arabic and it wasn't until years later (after traveling extensively in the region and coming to really understand their "culture") that the blinders were lifted. I came to the conclusion years ago that if anyone qualifies as one of the "false prophets" we were warned against it is Muhammad.
