Birds of a Feather Pinned Together?!

By Sheila R. Cherry
02-05-2000

Washington fashion often becomes trademark symbolism: Barbara Bush’s tri-strand of oversized pearls; Pat Nixon’s “good Republican cloth coat”; even Washington Mayor Anthony Williams’ bow ties.

The items are not unique to be sure, until they become signature statements for their famous wearers. Such is the case of the brooch that has been gracing Democrat power suits from Secretary of State Madeleine Albright to Maryland Lt. Gov. Kathleen Kennedy Townsend. Ask for it by its official name, the “Liberty Eagle,” and most local jewelers need a description. Ask for it as the “Hillary pin” and they quote prices and availability.

The golden bird, perched defiantly atop a pearlescent sphere, was crafted by Georgetown jeweler Ann Hand, wife of former Johnson administration protocol chief Lloyd Hand. Former Clinton White House communications director Ann Lewis was quoted in a February 1998 article in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel explaining that during the 1996 presidential campaign, the pin “became a symbol for women who were supporting the president.” Local sellers say most purchasers now consider it a solidarity statement supporting first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton.

The first lady wore it as she assailed a “vast right-wing conspiracy” on the Today show in 1998. One adorned the suit of presidential secretary Betty Currie as she testified before a grand jury during the Monica Lewinsky sex scandal.

The first lady reportedly wears the $75 faux version. In gold, with a pearl and ruby eyes, the pin sells for $5,500. Now the sorority pin of Democratic power brokers has alighted on a Republican. Poised prominently on the shoulder of an ebullient Cindy McCain — as she celebrated the recent victory of her husband, Arizona Sen. John McCain, in the New Hampshire Republican presidential primary — was the Hillary pin.

Asked why Cindy McCain wore the pin, a McCain spokesman replied, “I will get back to you.” But then never did.

MCCAIN WIFE WEARS 'HILLARY PIN'

The wife of GOP presidental hopeful John McCain stunned campaign watchers by wearing the famed "Hillary pin" as she celebrated victory in the New Hampshire Republican presidential primary, INSIGHT magazine is reporting.

The brooch, which has been gracing Democrat power suits from Secretary of State Madeleine Albright to Maryland Lt. Gov. Kathleen Kennedy Townsend to Betty Currie, was poised prominently on the shoulder of an ebullient Cindy McCain on Tuesday night, reports the magazine's Sheila Cherry.

Former Clinton White House communications director Ann Lewis was quoted in the MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL in 1998 explaining how the pin -- golden bird, perched defiantly atop a pearlescent sphere -- "became a symbol for women who were supporting the president."

"Local sellers say most purchasers now consider it a solidarity statement supporting first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton," who wore it as she assailed a "vast right-wing conspiracy" on NBC's TODAY show in 1998.

Asked why Cindy McCain wore the pin, a McCain spokesman replied: "I will get back to you."

But they never did, reports the mag.

The pin being discussed along with other "First Lady" Pins is offered for sale at the Presidential Libraries. I purchased a copy of another style at the Herbert Hoover Library last year.

Definitely the phoenix; below the circle is an upward-pointing triangle which represents the flame by which the phoenix will destroy and renew itself every century.

It looks like the phoenix used in old Russian medals. I would suspect that it symbolizes the resurgence (they hope) of Russian style communism. Personally knowing the Clinton's biggest backer and some of the connections they have, I can attest that they aren't liberals, they aren't simply old style left leaning democrats, they aren't socialists. They are out and out communists.

The father of the man that made Bill Clinton was one of the founders of the US communist party... and the family business continues. Hint for the insiders: His company's stock certificate featured a hammer and sickle. Not Tyson and not Armand Hammer.

You're right. A phoenix facing the left vs an eagle facing the right does have symbolic significance in their strange chosen message of unity

Well, I'm freaked.

We have discussed this pin before. The assc. with nazi symbolism is very strange.

The phoenix-rising from the ashes, looking left, dominating the world (the fake pearl) would fall in line with hitlery's inability to say our pledge without adding the words 'I pledge alligiance to the America that can be.

And it fits with her marxist history-a revamping, changing of our nation into the massive village she envisions. Up from the ashes (our foundations) and steadily seeking the hellhole that is the leftist nirvana. YIKES!

>>Weird how it looks like the Nazi symbol <<

We know Hitlery isn't patriotic, so we can rule out that is a motivation. What is the symbolism???

The woman is evil incarnate, whatever the answer.

You go ahead and start the trend, cg. I don't want to take a chance on being mistook for one "of them".

You get the trend started and I will join in late, after you have the ownership clearly defined.

Thank you for posting the photos in #5. I've always referred to it as the fascist eagle because of that similarity.

...below the circle is an upward-pointing triangle which represents the flame by which the phoenix will destroy and renew itself... I hadn't noticed that bit before, crystalk, but you're right--it's there.

Clearly that pearl is the world clutched in their claws and I believe they are quite willing to burn it to ashes if necessary to create their own vision of a new "reborn" world in their vision and in their control. They being our own domestically cultivated fascists.

Is it an eagle or a phoenix? I think it's a phoenix pretending to be an eagle because the fascists have to feign patriotism until they are able to burn us down. IMO. They don't call it the Hitlery Pin for nothin'.
