I dunno... I've never been a Stones fan. Mick Jagger just plain scares me. Or, maybe it's because I'm a Beatles fan.

I have to agree with you, rintense. She may have portrayed herself as a slut, but if America wasn't buying it, she wouldn't be selling it. Her place in pop music history is more of a reflection of the slide of American mores in the 80's. And for the record, as a raging-hormone teenager in the 80's, Madonna was juuuust fine by me :-)

Madonna opened to doors to others like herself ---like Christina Aguilera, others who have to remove their clothes to get noticed. There are many more talented female singers in music history, ones with beautiful voices which she doesn't have. There are Linda Ronstant, Emily Harris, Pat Benatar and many others who got by on talent not just sex.

And the world would be a much more pleasant place for it!

It is a sad commentary that we live in an age where some (you included) discribe as "breaking barriers" those acts of vulgarity and shameless conduct by the likes of Madonna. In another age, acts of actual courage (Jackie Robinson) breaking the color barrier amid death threats, James Merredith entering college at the University of Mississippi, Amelia's feats in aviation, Jesse Owens in Germany, and so on. I agree that Madonna will take her place in music history, and hopefully, as the world moves back to a more true definition of "breaking barriers", history will note Madonna as one of the skankiest no-talents to ever disgrace a stage.

I like all those ladies for different reasons. Honestly, 'Jagged Little Pill' has to be one of the best albums on the 90s. Alanis said things in her lyrics that every chick who's been in a bad relationship has wanted to say, but never did. 'You Oughta Know' was released after I broke up with my boyfriend and it just said everything I wanted to say (well, except a certain part about a movie theater). ;)

Who farted in all these pictures? Madonna looks as if she's whiffing a nasty eggish one, especially in the last two.

I remember first hearing Madonna at volleyball camp in 1984. We thought she was black because no white girl would make music like that (at that time). All the teachers and parents hated her- which meant that we as teens loved her. ;)

Again, I don't think Madonna's voice is anything special. And the other women you mentioned are fabulously talented. Pat Benatar is one of my favs.

I know taste is personal/subjective/etc., but you've got to be shiftin' me here. Madonna's music with the patina of blackness? Which songs---"Holiday?" "Like a Virgin?" "Cherish?"

heh, for me, Madonna's "Lucky Star" was the first music video I ever watched on that brand new sensation, MTV. And you're right also - teens will LOVE whatever their parents HATE. When my daughters are teens, I am planning to loudly let it be known that I abosolutely HATE classical music, LOATHE jazz, and LOVE whatever slutty ho or drugged up rockstar is popular at the time. Do ya think reverse psychology will work? :-)
