As revealed on US breakfast telly this morning, Dean Kamen's Segway< is on sale from today via the Amazon 'early adoptors' club. Delivery is US-only and your $4950 machine actually ships in March at the earliest (although in a bid for even more publicity, 30 consumers will be hand-picked to receive their Segways before Christmas).

You mean like getting hit by a jogging slick willie.

I want to see one of these on a sidewalk in January in downtown Chicago.

I want to see one of these on a sidewalk in January in downtown Chicago.

It'll still move at 15 mph...they just don't tell you that it'll be sideways skidding along the ice on Michigan Avenue, praying you don't end up as a hood ornament on a CTA bus...

Like I said, it's a great toy - just not for five grand!

Segway? Segway to fat land....sheesh...as if American's need another reason NOT to walk. You can't really even carry an umbrella with one of these. For people with MS or a somewhat handicapping disease these might be useful, but for healthy people? PLUS, I'd like to see it do the hills of Seattle on a rainy day.....Bet Jeff Bezos walks.

The things are gay-mobiles. When they first came out with the invention, it was to sell for $2000.

They'll be a big hit in CA. If one pulls out on me, the dude will have a Camaro logo on his buttocks.

Five GRAND? Somebody's smoking the good stuff. My "Cheaper Than Dirt" catalog lists a motorized scooter for two hundred dollars that does everything the Segway does and folds up besides. Well, the price will come down...or the thing will go under.

And in 18 months, you'll be able to buy that $5K segway for $200 at a yard sale.

You'll recognize them easily - they'll be in the same pile as the exercise equipment.

And those 3/4 complete jigsaw puzzles and board games. The remaining pieces will be jumbled in a box sitting by an old lamp.

If a Segway hits you, it's like being hit by another pedestrian . . .

Yes, imagine Marshall Faulk practicing a running play on the sidewalk and you are in the way. Just a typical "pedestrian".

I spent 30 minutes on the Amazon website and NOWHERE do they say what is the range these things will travel on one charge of batteries.

If they want you to pay 5 large I think they ought to tell you how far you can go.

just remember to take them on with your inside shoulder, then you can just toss 'em to the side.

I bet my manual lawnmower, which looks just like this $5000 yuppie toy, can go faster and give me a freshly cut lawn all at the same time!

I think most of you are missing the point that people will buy these because they are fun. Whether or not it's dangerous is another issue. And the price? There are plenty of Humvees and other expensive toys rumbling around out there.

I'm sorry, but I just don't get it. It's a scooter. A really, really expensive scooter, but still just a scooter. Why does anyone think that these things are going to revolutionize transportation any more than a moped (which you can actually sit down on)?

I don't think it has batteries.
