weikel has a point; Ron Paul is the only Libertarian in the GOP, so he's going to be the lightning rod. He needs company.

Like I said, there's many reasons--and usually GOOD ones--for the thinly populated regions to be so thinly populated.

Ron Paul did that; now he's a traitor, worse than any Democrat, because he won't walk in lock-step with the Republican leadership. When socialsts took over the Democratic party, those conservatives who noticed switched parties and became Republicans. Now socialists have taken over the Republican Party. Where are conservatives supposed to go now?
To: exodus
Follow Paul's example. Hes just one guy. Anyone with libertarian sympathies should take Paul's approach.

Except for running for public office, I do, weikel.

I vote in every Republican primary, trying to find a candidate I can support in the general election. Failing that, (which is usual) I vote for every libertarian I can. If my choice is between a Republican or a Democrat, I vote for the one who most closely holds my views.

I vote NO on almost all bond elections.

You are the only libertarian I've run across with a supportive attitude toward emiment domain. Every other LPer I've met holds that property rights are absolute, the gubmint taking your property for public use with "fair compensation" is inherently unfair, and that they'd cheerfully write a Constitutional Amendment forbidding the practice.

And the "beneficial use" clauses of water laws in arid states would be enough to send most Libertarians I've met into apoplexy.

"...20,000 people is not going to make a siginificant dent in the voting patterns of Idaho, since the state has a population of 1.2 million. Like I said, you're stuck with Wyoming if all you're using is 20,000--and even that isn't enough."

20,000 ACTIVE voters, knowledgable about the issues concerning them, who can also EACH be expected to work hard to push their political agenda, would make a dent in almost any State, Poohbah.

Did Dubya have the right to go awol from the Air National Guard? Do the words in the law that make it illegal to be awol count?

Bullshit. You've been drinking the DUh.com Kool-aid.

Also more improtantly(there are rich libertarians) we also need to get control of as much of the press as possible. Are the New York and LA times publicly traded if so hostile takeover them fire all the liberal reporters install libertarian/conservative columnist. The liberal TV news networks tend to be owned by megacorps( don't understand why they are liberal for the life of me) which would be nearly impossible to take over.

I'd only allow eminent domain for essential infrastructure and compensation should be triple the worth of the property.

I don't agree with "fair compensation" laws; the fair compensation forced upon owners is never enough to replace what is lost.

I think that people forced to give up their property should be in the drivers seat - forget officially declared "fair," and give the owner enough to replace what he's lost.

My opinion on "beneficial use" would depend on your definition of "beneficial."

Water needed for developement I can support. If "beneficial" means needed for conservation, I've got a problem.

The farmers of Klamath Falls paid to build their lake, and had legal title to the water.
To: exodus
Bravo Sierra on the Klamath Lake folks actually paying for their water. They got the evil GodGov you despise so much to STEAL the land (according to the Libertarian construct of eminent domain) from the Klamath tribe, and they got everyone else to pay for building the water works.
# 254 by Poohbah
**********************

No, Poohbah, the farmers paid on the government LOAN for years, and finally paid off the note. The water was theirs, they owned it, and the government contract marked "paid in full" said so.

Nonetheless, the government still required that the farmers pay for the water they had already paid for.

The Klamath Tribe? They use the lake also. That's the way eminent domain is supposed to work, Poohbah; everybody benefits.

Why do the porcupines equate asking critical questions with an effort to stop the project?
To: Petronski
It's like questioning the Five-Year Plan in the late and unlamented USSR. You're questioning their theology, not their politics.
# 257 by Poohbah

Really? Than to be a Republican must be to believe in the theology of Bush, because every time I criticize Bush or the Republicans, I'm attacked as a "domestic" enemy.

Don't I know that I'm at war, and that I should offer unquestioning support to my leader?

There's no need for you to continue pinging me to your comments. I'm not interested in what you have to say, since I'm privy to your opinions on other subjects, such as cop-killing, and that puts a damper on my regard for your opinions in general.

That feeling you have, wondering why almost all huge corporations support liberal anti-capitalist politicians and projects, is why so many suspect an international socialist "conspiracy."

I would have to agree with that premise. Many of us conservatives are angry with the liberals and we want their programs stopped and reversed. But, by nature, conservatives are a gyroscope to society. Sadly, we - and the Republican Candidates, have yet to be sufficiently energized to do what needs to be done to reverse the travesties of the RATS. Maybe in about 100 years the Libertarians will have sufficient power to enact their agenda, but I doubt it.

Of course, a potato blight spreading in one part of the gulch couldn't be dealt with without impinging on someone elses crop, so then they'd all starve

You'd think we'd all just go there to raise potatoes? Surely you're not that stupid...

It better not take 100 years, Enterprise. We only have a few years to reverse our slide into socialism.

After that, we would have to wait for socialism to destroy itself, and I don't want to see that happen to my country.

I truly think it is too late to reverse that slide. I grieve for my children's future.
