Statement Attributed to Al Qaeda Warns of More Attacks on New York, Washington
Saturday, November 16, 2002
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates A statement attributed to Al Qaeda threatened more attacks in New York and Washington unless America stops supporting Israel and converts to Islam, an Arab TV reporter who received the unsigned document said Saturday.
Yosri Fouda, correspondent for the satellite station Al-Jazeera, told The Associated Press he received the six-page document on Wednesday. That was a day after the TV station broadcast an audiotape purportedly made by Usama bin Laden.
Fouda, who is known for good contacts within Al Qaeda, would only say that the statement came from his sources with the group. But he insisted he was certain it came from the terrorist movement's leadership.
Fouda, speaking by telephone from London, said the statement called on Americans to stop supporting Israel and other governments that "oppress" Muslims or face more attacks. The statement also called on Americans to convert to Islam, he said.
Fouda quoted the statement as saying: "Stop your support for Israel against the Palestinians, for Russians against the Chechens ... for corrupt leaders in our countries ... [and] leave us alone or expect us in Washington and New York."
He added the statement demanded U.S. troops leave the Arabian Peninsula, and justified the killings of American civilians because they pay taxes that finance military operations.
There was no immediate reaction from Washington. No officials were available for comment at the Pentagon or the National Security Council Saturday afternoon. A report on the statement as described by Fouda was carried in The Sunday Times of London.
Fouda is a prominent Arab television journalist who has broken several important stories about Al Qaeda. In September, Al-Jazeera broadcast Fouda's interviews with two top Al Qaeda operatives hiding in Pakistan, Ramzi Binalshibh and Khaled Sheik Mohammed.
Binalshibh was arrested in Karachi, Pakistan, shortly after the broadcast and was transferred to U.S. custody.
Fouda said the statement also referred to the crisis between the United States and Iraq as one more reason to attack Americans.
"You are placing Muslims under siege in Iraq, where children die every day. Oh, how weird that you don't care for 1.5 million Iraqi children who died under siege, but when 3,000 of your compatriots died, the whole world was shaken," Fouda quoted the statement as saying.
Meanwhile, a militant Islamic Web site that carries news about Al Qaeda has dismissed as lies a report that a senior member of the terror group is in U.S. custody.
U.S. officials in Washington said Friday that one of the leaders of Al Qaeda had been detained in a foreign country and handed over to U.S. authorities.
The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, declined to identify the detainee, but said he was not Al Qaeda leader Usama bin Laden, his chief depity, his son or the suspected mastermind of the Sept. 11 attacks.
The site scoffed at the U.S. officials' refusal to name the detainee. "Maybe they fear to announce a certain name, and Al Qaeda would issue a denial so their [the U.S.] situation would become worse," it said.

...and justified the killings of American civilians because they pay taxes that finance military operations. They think we should be killed because we pay taxes? Do they think we actually enjoy paying taxes? What kind of logic is this? Geesh.
To: Maelstrom; OldFriend
Yes, but they want us to covert, stop supporting Israel, AND leave them alone....or they'll kill us. If we did the first two, why would they want us to leave them alone? The whole thing's whacky. Therefore, it must be authentic.

Allah is Satan and Mohammed is his buttbuddy.

Oh, well, then. Why didn't thay just SAY SO? All they want is for all Americans to convert to Islam?
Count me in! I wouldn't want to upset them. Where do I sign?

Better watch out in Orlando, too. A big nest of them has been busted down there:
ed: 6:34 a.m. EST November 15, 2002
ORLANDO, Fla. -- The arrest of Central Florida's most prominent Arab-American businessman during Thursday's raids of several gift shops in Orlando's tourist district could uncover evidence that the area's tourism industry was used to funnel money to terrorist organizations in the Middle East, according to Local 6 News.
Tony Pipitone Reports
Federal Agents Raid Gift Shops
Federal agents raided the gift shops Thursday and arrested their owners and managers for employing illegal workers and setting up shell companies to hide payments to them, the U.S. Attorneys Office said.
The arrests included Palestinian-American businessman Jesse I. Maali, 57, of Isleworth.
Maali and M. Saleem Khanani, 51, of Orlando were indicted along with three other men by a federal grand jury. They are accused of hiring 53 foreign nationals at seven local Big Bargain World shops.
The federal government is also reportedly investigating whether money Maali gave to charities went to worthy causes or whether it was used to fund terror, Local 6 Problem Solver Tony Pipitone reported.
A federal judge ordered Maali held without bond Thursday because of his "substantial financial ties to Middle East organizations that advocate violence."
"It's just a bunch of garbage," Maali's attorney, Mark Nejame, said. "It's a scare tactic. It's wrong. It's inappropriate. His biggest crime is that he's a Middle Eastern man in 2002. If they went ahead and arrested everybody in this country who is alleged to be employing illegal aliens, we would have half of American businessmen in prison."
Pipitone reported that searches at Maali's 12 businesses and at his $2.2 million home could turn up evidence that money from Orange County's tourist mecca was funneled to the Middle East.

The statement also called on Americans to convert to Islam, he said.
It's time for all Muslims to convert to PeeWee's Playhouse or get their brains blown out.
