You know what? I think there is a fair chance of a new political party emerging, one that demands something be done about illegal immigration. And it would be a very interesting group, because it would appeal to unions, law-and-order conservatives and others who want this stuff to stop. Remaining elements of the Dem Party would merge with the GOP, and, instead of the old labor/capital split of the past, we would have a split between open immigration/global/corporate interests and those who wish to hold back immigration. We could very well be in a state of political party flux like this country was in 1856 - because there is almost nothing of value left in the Democratic Party.

I think you're refering to the Reform Party of 2000. I didn't agree with Pat's views on the middle-east, but in the RP that year, you had essentially exactly what you're talking about.
I'm not sure what the remedy is. Bush is doing some things I really like. He's also doing some things that drive me nuts.
