Tombstone paper calls for militia (to combat illegal immigration)
Arizona Daily Star ^ | 11/15/02 | Ignacio Ibarra

Posted on 11/15/2002 8:14:13 AM PST by dirtboy

Cochise County's "official newspaper" has issued a call to arms and is spearheading the formation of a local militia to combat illegal immigration.

Tucson human rights activist Isabel Garcia said the Tombstone Tumbleweed's rhetoric is the latest manifestation of a militant vigilantism that has long existed in Cochise County with the acceptance and encouragement of local officials.

She said Cochise County Sheriff Larry Dever's public friendship with groups like Glenn Spencer's American Patrol, the sheriff's lack of investigation into Roger and Don Barnett's armed detention of illegal entrants and the clear unwillingness on the part of Cochise County Attorney Chris Roll to investigate and prosecute the two brothers have given them credibility and encouraged groups like Texas-based Ranch Rescue and the new Tombstone Militia.

"To have the official newspaper of the county call on people to take up arms is very dangerous, very frightening. Law enforcement and public officials should be concerned," she said.

Garcia canceled an upcoming speaking engagement in Bisbee out of concern over the growing hostility in the county.

Roll, the county attorney, said every case brought to him is reviewed under the same standards. "If we have sufficient evidence that a crime has been committed, we will prosecute."

Sheriff Dever said frustrations with the federal government's inability to stem the flow of illegal immigration has attracted the attention of a number of groups on all sides of the issue.

While he acknowledged attending and speaking at American Patrol meetings, he said his presence should be construed as being a voice of reason rather than a supporter of particular agendas or methodology.

At least 43 people have joined the Citizens Border Patrol militia since the front page call to arms appeared in the Tombstone Tumbleweed last month - under a headline that read "Enough is Enough!" - and support continues to grow, said Chris Simcox, a former California teacher who is now owner, publisher and editor of the Tombstone weekly.

Simcox isn't shy about using the words "vigilante" and "militia" to describe his plans. He sees both as a patriotic obligation in a time of war and a necessity in light of the federal government's failure to stop the flood of immigrants funneling through Cochise County.

His plan is to put armed, able-bodied militia members on private property near the border to create a presence and a deterrent to illegal border crossers.

"This has nothing to do with the Mexican people per se. . . . It's about stopping uncontrolled immigration," he said. "We want local people, we don't want the Rambos, the mercenaries and soldiers of fortune that some of these groups seem to be made up of."

Cochise County Supervisor Paul Newman, who represents the Tombstone area on the county Board of Supervisors said the county has no authority or desire to interfere with the publisher's First Amendment right to publish what he chooses.

But the supervisor said he is concerned that the harsh editorial tone of the newspaper not be represented as the position of Cochise County. He's asked county staffers to look into the newspaper's use of the phrase "Official Newspaper of Cochise County" in its masthead.

According to state law, a newspaper awarded a county's legal advertising contract may be referred to as the county's official paper.

I missed this thread all weekend. This dicussion reminds me of the dispute over whether Chief Moose handled the sniper thing the right way. He withheld info that might have led to the capture of Muhammad so that 'vigilantes' wouldn't be encouraged to participate.

Now that's stupid. Had the general population known what the cops did, he would have been picked up or killed long before, and probably taken fewer victims.

Same thing here. The 2nd Amendment guarantees our ability to participate as citizens in the enforcement of law on property not owned by the Government. And on public property, I think the case can be made that we have a right as common owners to enforce the law when no agency is available. (Citizen's arrest ring a bell?)

Bush is for "open borders", migrant worker visas, and other such nonsense. You watch, he'll push Amnesty for these 12 million illegal trespassers along the "fast track", soon enough.

There can never be "homeland Security" with open borders as they are today.

Sorry, the "beaners" reference may be offensive to some. If they "the beaners", can call me Yankee, which they do, and that's fine with me as it would be a good description, I can call them "beaners".

Oh, It's not a pc reaction at all. I just haven't heard that term since about 1979! Tommy Chong had a song about 'Beaners! They'll kick ya in the nuts!" Seems he was prophetic...

And if someone called ME a Yankee, I'd be ready to fight! ;)

So then they shouldn't protect their own property so the illegals enter their property?

I said property owners do have the right to protect their own property but how will that stop illegals from coming over? The illegals will just find other places to come through so ultimately that doesn't solve the problem except of keeping trespassers off your land.

I'm not saying wimp out either, I don't see how it solves the problem, it would be better to find those bringing them in, employing people at less than minimum wage, go after those selling stolen social security numbers and committing other felony document fraud. And we need to do something about pandering politicians who keep saying "amnesty" because every time they do, that many more illegals make a dash for the border to get in on it. The whole problem is our government isn't doing what we pay it to do.

Yankee means different things to different folks. I'm from up north, my family came here quite a few generations ago. We've never really consdered ourselves "city folks". We were always self sufficient, thrifty, conservative etc. Oh yea, for you PC crowd out there, we did kick the $hit out of the "locals" when we got here. It seems like most folks from the south equate the term Yankee with liberal city slickers, but that is not always the case. A visit to some of the small New England towns would change your opinion quickly. My town has 5200 citizens in it and is conservative by anyones measure. So calling me a Yankee is a compliment :)

You're right. Homeland security will not be achieved with porous borders and lax enforcement of immigration laws. I'm all for the organization of local militias in each county (or parish) to aid local law enforcement in keeping an eye on any potential threat from terrorists or illegals. That's one way we can do our part in protecting our country.

This is EXACTLY what the Constitution means when it says,"a well regulated milita being necessary for a free state". Good for them!<\I>

I would like to add.. A government BY the people FOR the people!

We must always remind ourselves that WE ARE the government.

Some Yahoo will pop a cap in a beaners a$$. The Feds will step in, round up all the vigilantees, make arrests, forbid them to continue protecting the property. Then things will "return to normal" with thousands crossing the borders on a nightly basis.

Or some drug smuggler will "cap" some poor souls and make it look like "gringo racists"

Awww, don't be a candy-; Tombstone's fine in the summer - you just need to know when to come in out of the sun.

That's what Earp's saloon is for.

"I hope it is very dangerous & freightening to the illegals,..."

"Freightening" as in, "Load 'em up in a boxcar and ship 'em back to Mexico"? LOL!

Yeah, we've got the same sort of problems here in Texas, with no solution in sight for those crossing the river in search of better jobs, political freedom, and lower taxes:

the Red River, that is.

There's a ton of folks out here who, on the one hand, want something "done" about all those illegal aliens, complaining about how "they" don't pay taxes and Social Security, and then go right out the next morning and hire a half-dozen day laborers from the local mall parking lot for cash instead of going out to a bonded temporary labor contractor that withholds Social Security and income taxes, all nice and legal. It's part of how many folks out here enjoy la dolce vida, stretching every dollar as far as they can. ;-)

Until we get serious about this issue--and that means putting Mr. and Mrs. Soccer Mom in prison for a few years for doing this sort of thing, as well as closing the border (and closing the border means LOTS of bodies enforcing it, which is not cheap), and generally getting very hard-nosed at every point on the illegal alien chain of being--talk of unorganized militias sealing off the border, putting a token Army force on the border, building walls and minefields, et cetera, is about as useful as a screen door on a submarine and about as likely to happen as a Tancredo-Buchanan Presidential ticket getting an endorsement from MeCHA.
