In a recount, all you are doing is recounting the fraudulaent votes. If there were a chance that the recount would have given him the win, he would have probably done it. However, look at the numerous Gore recounts in Florida for your answer to recounts. The ONLY reason Gore kept pressing for a recount is that they hoped to be able to manufacture fraudulent votes. Thune wasn't going to do that.

An INVESTIGATION continues. If proof of fraudulence surfaces (very diffficult to find, but there are 30 DOJ investigators on the reservations) then that is a whole different story.

A South Dakota freeper said that most vote totalling is done by blue-haired grandmas who have done the job for years and are proud of their effort. Not a good thing to put them through this for a doubtful outcome.

Thune is following the right path, in my opinion.

I was waiting for someone to say that. You could count the votes a hundred time and probably get very little variance.

If the DOJ investigators turn up irrefutable evidence of significant voter fraud, there may be a legal remedy. Admittedly, it is a long shot, and the fraud would have to be discovered very quickly now to have any chance, but there is probably little to be gained from just having a recount of the same votes over again.

I agree. Fraud can take several forms. Some are easier to catch than others. If dead people in Shannon County voted in numbers greater than Johnson's statewide margin, I think it is very likely that a judge would order a new election. However, I doubt that happened.

One thing I've not seen is how many of the Shannon County votes were cast at the polls and how many were absentee. One of the things to check is the signature of voters at the polling places versus a verified signature taken by investigators.

If most of the votes came in absentee, one can still do a signature check. However, my guess on absentees is that Democrat operatives simply sat down with people, ensured that they voted "correctly," and then had them sign the envelope. That would be hard to prove unless someone talks. It's also possible, if ballot security was loose, for the envelopes to be opened and the votes switched after the fact. That would also be hard to prove.

As a Thune supporter and contributor, I could have accepted his decision to not ask for a recount if he would have made some strong statements about the rampant voter fraud and that South Dakotans need to take back their election process. Instead, he gave us some watered-down political posturing for his next campaign. I thought I was supporting a man of conviction. I was just supporting another politician.

Bingo. Let the Feds do their job and put some people in jail. It'll take about a year of investigations. That will put us right at campaign time with some very compelling reasons to get the Repub vote out, and the Rats will be under a microscope. This will put a chill on people who are considering taking $10 to vote for a Rat. Then, we get rid of Dashole and all of his seniority.

A recount is how you get to look at the votes and detect fraud. During the recount Thune can challenge ballots. How are you going to find something you never look for?
