HAMDEN, Conn. -- President George W. Bush would lead former Vice President Al Gore by double digits in a hypothetical rematch of the 2000 election, a poll Wednesday showed.

Bush was favored over Gore, 53 percent to 41 percent, with 6 percent choosing someone else or saying they did not know who to support, the poll by the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute showed.

CAST YOUR VOTE Bush Or Gore In 2004? Next Democratic Presidential Candidate?

Gore was the top choice for the Democratic nominee, Democrats who were polled said. About 32 percent favored Gore, followed by 22 percent for New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, 11 percent for Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle and 8 percent each for Connecticut Sen. Joseph Lieberman, Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry and Missouri Rep. Dick Gephardt.

Bush would also be favored over other potential Democratic candidates: 55 percent to 38 percent over Clinton and 54 percent to 37 percent over Lieberman.

Also, the poll showed support for Vice President Dick Cheney staying in if Bush gets a second term. If Cheney goes, 63 percent said Bush should replace him with former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani.

Bush got a 62 percent approval rating, with 93 percent of Republicans, 38 percent of Democrats and 65 percent of independents saying they liked the job he is doing. In a February Quinnipiac poll, Bush's approval rating was 76 percent.

The majority of people who were polled said the economy should be a higher priority for the country than war with Iraq. About 70 percent of those polled said the economy is "poor" or "not so good."

Quinnipiac polled 1,069 registered voters nationwide by telephone from Nov. 7 to 11. The poll has a survey error margin of about 3 percentage points.

I have so many but it will never happen. First and foremost, dismantle the Dept. of bloated Education.
