Sure it's the Onion, but in this case, it's dead on true.

resting his feet on a coffee table cluttered with unpaid bills, crusted cereal bowls, and bongwater-stained socialist pamphlets.

BEHOLD!!!:

"resting his feet on a coffee table cluttered with unpaid bills, crusted cereal bowls, and bongwater-stained Frederic Bastiat, F.A. Hayek, and Ludwig von Mises pamphlets."

With a little sleight of hand, I've turned it into a LIBERTINES' apartment.

Considering that Hayek, Bastiat and von Mises were all pro-free market, pro-liberty, pro-capitalist, pro-personal responsibility and anti-totalitarian... your scenario would not hold water. Hayek was listed by both Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher as a major influence on their personal philosophy. Perhaps it would be wise to read him before you defame him; or are you running with the Buchanan anti-capitalists these days?

The only thing wrong with your little prank is that the theories Bastiat, Hayek, and Von Mises actually work.

It's understandable that you would miss that one subtle, yet important difference.

"The history of society is the inexorable history of class struggle," said sixth-year undergraduate Kirk Dorff, 23, resting his feet on a coffee table cluttered with unpaid bills, crusted cereal bowls, and bongwater-stained socialist pamphlets.

"Seven years of college down the drain!"

,,, obviously a little too early to discuss redistribution of wealth using this example as a model.

BTW, I have no problem with those distinguished gentlemen. I just wonder what they would have thought about the bong-water.

Before you snigger too much, try reading The Road to Serfdom by Hayek.

You'll be glad you did. HRP

At the end of my sophomore year, I was indoctrinated during a school trip to the most western part of Virginia in the Appalachian mountains and became a Socialist.  (Mind you the year before I just turned 18 in time to vote for Ronald Reagan's second term!)

In my junior year, I moved out of the dorm and into a small, 3 bedroom house with 2 other guys from the dorm.

We really did try this exact experiment!

However, it quickly disintegrated along the lines as described in this article.  Eventually, I wound up cleaning the bathroom most of the year since if I didn't, it would have been taken over by crud.  I hoarded my food and kept clean dishes and flatware in my room.

Perhaps it was because I was an only child that made me think this would work but I can tell you now, I became a rabid conservative after that experience.

Needless to say, none of us were roommates the next year!
