The Simpsons are probably the most scathing satire on network TV... SNL probably #2, and South Park on Commedy Central is up there too (but that's cable).

Simpsons are merciless, they pic on all sides of the political isle, the portray republicans as evil despots (side show bob becomes mayor episode).... they portray democrats as idiots... They poke fun at gay republicans ("A Gay President in 2084?", "We're realistic" is the reply) They pick on gun nuts, and gun control freaks at the same time....

I agree they are one of only a handful of shows that even shows a family routinely going to church, and Homer and Marge's relationship is built on love and trust.. lets face it, it would have to be. But to paint the simpsons as strictly conservative, or strictly liberal I think is misguided... there are no sacred cows on the Simpsons... if its funny, its game.
