I hate to spoil a purely lovely moment, Sistah DaisyScarlett, but whenever I see the Southern Belle gowns, I think of the yards and yards of fabrics, all the way to the floor, with corsets and petticoats beneath.

Imagine not having deodorants in steamy climes!
Some summer ones could be washed by hand, but no dry cleaning available for the wools and velvets.

The Number # seller then had to have been toilet (well, not really..:)) water - used on the men's handkerchiefs, too!!

Thank goodness we can take being odor-free for granted!
