Bill Moyers- If You Like God in Gov.-- Then Get Ready for the Rapture
Drudge via PBS.org ^ | Bill Moyers

Posted on 11/11/2002 12:05:41 PM PST by Dallas

Way back in the 1950's when I first tasted politics and journalism, Republicans briefly controlled the White House and Congress. With the exception of Joseph McCarthy and his vicious ilk, they were a reasonable lot, presided over by that giant war hero, Dwight Eisenhower, who was conservative by temperament and moderate in the use of power.

That brand of Republican is gone. And for the first time in the memory of anyone alive, the entire federal government — the Congress, the Executive, the Judiciary — is united behind a right-wing agenda for which George W. Bush believes he now has a mandate.

That mandate includes the power of the state to force pregnant women to give up control over their own lives.

It includes using the taxing power to transfer wealth from working people to the rich.

It includes giving corporations a free hand to eviscerate the environment and control the regulatory agencies meant to hold them accountable.

And it includes secrecy on a scale you cannot imagine. Above all, it means judges with a political agenda appointed for life. If you liked the Supreme Court that put George W. Bush in the White House, you will swoon over what's coming.

And if you like God in government, get ready for the Rapture. These folks don't even mind you referring to the GOP as the party of God. Why else would the new House Majority Leader say that the Almighty is using him to promote 'a Biblical worldview' in American politics?

So it is a heady time in Washington — a heady time for piety, profits, and military power, all joined at the hip by ideology and money.

Don't forget the money. It came pouring into this election, to both parties, from corporate America and others who expect the payback. Republicans outraised democrats by $184 million dollars. And came up with the big prize — monopoly control of the American government, and the power of the state to turn their ideology into the law of the land. Quite a bargain at any price.

That's it for this week.

For NOW, I'm Bill Moyers.

It includes giving corporations a free hand to eviscerate the environment and control the regulatory agencies meant to hold them accountable.

This sounds pretty serious. The environment is going to disappear! This is even worse than the rape liberals normally say conservatives want to do to the environment, as in, "Bush and the oil companies want to rape Alaska". If they would have just done their usual rape of the environment, I wouldn't get too nervous. No this time they're going to eviscerate it. We have at most a year to live. I just want to say to all my friends here at FR, it's been nice knowing ya!!

Don't worry--PBS is in trouble on its own.

A recent Masterpiece import from UK, The Forsyth Saga, was supposed to be shot in the arm to the "ailing" network. However, it has been a shot in the foot. (The basic problem with the series was that the lead actress was coyote-ugly. Why watch a goat-ugly woman hour after hour when MTV, etc are available?) Their ratings are down and their icons like Louis R. are on other networks. Other than federal monies, their donations decreased along with other charities in the post-9-11/recession economy. Furthermore, corporations who advertise on it are spending less on ads and can spend it more effectively with a greater audiences elsewhere.

No wonder they have tried to insulate themselves against the full effects of capitalism!

I'm calling my congressman, and am going to ask him to defund this trash.

I wish I could do the same but unfortunately despite a favorable redistricting giving my congressional district a majority of Bush voters in a state that voted for Gore, the GOP in this state is totally inept and hasn’t put up a good candidate in my congressional district in awhile now plus the national GOP has been ignoring congressional races in my state despite the fact that three seats currently controlled by Dems would be competitive with more money. Heck they were GOP controlled back in 1998. Stupid GOP. This could have been a landslide.

Sonny, right on target: What does Moyers say about this... (Oh, I forgot Moyers was an LBJ guy, not a JFK supporter)

"John F. Kennedy told Harvard students that "he knew Joe pretty well, and he may have something." In February 1952, John Kennedy called McCarthy a "great American patriot." In 1953 Bobby Kennedy joined McCarthy's staff and McCarthy was godfather to Bobby's first child. Bobby was always loyal to Joe. " (!)

I think even LBJ would want to punch Bill Moyers in the face if he were still alive, reading this BS.

Good luck...click on my name for over 100 Republicans who voted NOT to decrease funding 1%. ~sigh

Also ask him /her for a copy of the report due under SEC. 19. Pursuant to the existing responsibility of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting under section 396(g)(1)(A) of the Communications Act of 1934 (47 U.S.C. 396(g)(1)(A))
(what? who writes this gibberish?)

Bill Moyers, if ever there was a stereotype of a limousine liberal, he is it.

Isn't Moyers the one who published a lie about Barry Goldwater during the 1964 campaign and then refused to apologize?

While he's into scaring liberals with the horrors of a conservative government, he left off the obvious: Conservatives will take money away from phony liberal intellectuals who like to pontificate on our dime.

No one cares if these blowhards talk, we're just sick to death of having to pay for it with our tax dollars. Bye-bye to the biased one-sided PBS liberal diatribes.
