Iraq Committee Recommends Rejection of UN Text

BAGHDAD, Iraq (Reuters) - The head of an Iraqi parliamentary committee Monday recommended that the assembly reject a tough new U.N. resolution demanding that Iraq disarm.

"The committee recommends the following: the rejection of the Security Council resolution 1441 and not to approve it in accordance with the opinion of our people who put confidence in their representatives," Salim al-Kubaisi, head of the Arab and international relations committee told parliament.

He also recommended the parliament refer the final decision to the Revolutionary Command Council, which is led by President Saddam Hussein, "to take the appropriate decision to defend the people of Iraq, their independence and dignity."

I sure as shootin' didn't expect it. I expected the parliament to sign off on the deal, and wait for the inspectors to arrive before it started jerking them around. I wonder if this is their final answer...

I'm actually suprised by this. I thought he would pretend to go along, at least partially, in order to try to avoid the inevitable for as long as possible. But he's obviously stupider than I thought.

Actually I didn't. I expected Saddam to try and drag this out for a long as possiable and get as close to spring as he could.

This may make our job a lot easier.

When a politicians is too cowardly to make a decision, he sends it to committee... Saddam isn't quite as audacious as he was a decade ago. I guess getting your butt handed to you in a sling will do that. ;^)

Exactly. The underlings can't take the chance of reccomending it, then having Saddam reject it.

So did I. I thought he was going to keep the inspectors busy while he sneaks stuff out of the country into Saudi Arabia because the Iraqis just conveniently opened up that roadway into Saudi Arabia that was closed since the Gulf War.
