Texas Freeper Fieldtrip to GHW Bush Library and Museum

The Heart of Texas Chapter (HOT) of Free Republic would like to invite any interested Freepers and their families to join us on Saturday, November 23rd for a day at the George H.W. Bush Library and Museum in College Station, Texas. We will meet at noon inside the entrance to the museum. Afterwards we plan to go to a local restaurant for some good food and conversation.

• Chicken Oil - STILL HERE!
• Tom's BBQ - Gone. Bought out by Houston businessman, closed shortly thereafter (but C&J's BBQ is MUCH better)
• Cow Hop - Gone. Briefly moved out of Northgate (to old Ponderosa location on S. College) and tried to repackage itself as family restaurant; moved back to Northgate before too long, but never recovered.
• Flying Tomato - Long gone.
• Fajita Rita's - STILL HERE!
• La Taqueria - If you're talking about the place behind The Deluxe Diner, it's long gone. Deluxe is still here.
• Mazzios - Long gone.
• Fatburger - STILL HERE!
• Chilis - STILL HERE!
• "Mongolia Grill" - Never heard of it (does that answer your question??)
• Sbisa - I'll pretend you didn't say that.

Regarding places you didn't mention, most of the big-name restaurants are here now, plus there are old faithfuls like DoubleDave's Pizza. As I mentioned above, the best BBQ is a place called C&J's on Hwy 30 (Harvey Road) 2 miles east of Post Oak Mall. They also have a place near downtown Bryan on TX Ave. There's also Wings-n-More, for great chicken wings. Lotsa good ethnic restaurants - the Chinese eateries are close to outnumbering the Mexican eateries in CS. Don't forget FREEBIRD'S World Burrito - now in three CS locations (two of them with adequate seating).

Here's an irony: IMO the best hamburger in town is at a little place on S. College (next to Pepe's) called The Burger House - run by a Korean family. Their burgers are incredible. The place is probably too small for a FreeperMeet, but you still oughta try it some time.

A word of warning if you haven't been here in a few years. Our servants in the city council have spent lots and lots of our hard-earned money to "revitalize" Northgate, which has been declared a strategic asset of the city (or something like that). The problem is that Northgate's "dumpy" look is part of its attraction to the student population. Millions of dollars later we have: a parking garage, brick sidewalks, parking meters, a "Promenade" (what you get when you turn a useful street into a pedestrian walk), a "no glass container in Northgate" ordinance. The Northgate businesses themselves still look dumpy, and now you can't patronize the businesses without paying to park. As you might guess, the business owners kept yelling, "STOP HELPING US!", but the city was on a mission. Their job done, they've moved on to the next boondoggle (a convention center, I think). My tax dollars at work. :-(

On the plus side, they have been spending money in useful ways: University Drive and Texas Avenue in the university area have both been upgraded to six-lane divided streets. Eventually, they'll do the same for Tx Ave south of Harvey Road (desperately needed).

Is mudlot still there, or did they finally pave it?

Believe it or not, half of it is still there. The owner appears to understand what a prime piece of real estate he has, and has been holding out for a good offer.

St. Mary's Catholic Church across Nagle St. has been on a big expansion program in recent years; they bought up half of the Mud Lot for new development.

What about Cafe Excel and that little Italian place across the street from CE? DH and I had our first date at Cafe Excel.

Cafe Eccel is still there. I'm not sure what you mean by the 'Italian place'. Maybe it was one of the successors to La Taqueria.

HOT folks, it sounds like C&J's BBQ might be a good place. I like Freebirds(wonder if the employees have spiked hair and body piercings like they do at the Austin location). Other options are Chicken Oil(southwestern IIRC), Fajita Ritas(Mexican), Chilis, and a few others mentioned in post #84.

Remember, College Station ain't Austin. YES!!! :-)

Spiked hair is a rare find in this town, although occasionally one might see interesting hair colors. We do see some body piercing, but not much of the kind that makes you cringe when you see someone thus adorned.

hello, I have not been able to spend much time on FR, but my wife and i would be interested in joining everyone. I have been to library before and it is wonderful. We live in Tyler and would like to know if anyone else from the area is going. Thanks

Everyone, sorry I haven't updated any info before now (been sick all week with the flu). It's official, we have secured the discounted group rate admission, yay! Adults will be $3.50, children 16 & under are free. I will be posting more details on logistics, how we will all find each other, etc., soon, so keep an eye on this thread. (I will ping all who have expressed interest so far when the info is posted.)

Any FReepers who haven't been in touch yet, there's still time for you to join in on our FReeper Field Trip to the George Bush (41) Presidential Library & Museum in College Station, TX. We meet at the Museum at Noon, Saturday, Nov. 23. (That's the Saturday before Thanksgiving weekend.) Looks like we will have FReepers coming in from practically every corner of the state, so please join us if you can. It's going to be a fun afternoon!

You will enjoy the Bush Library. And I may be a bit biased, but A&M is a great school which is highly rated and getting even better every year. I hope my nephews go to A&M over the Ivy League, Stanford and Berkeley - they'll get just as good an education and won't have to fight through the liberal tripe.

If any of you like to lift a longneck, check out the Dixie Chicken after the library. It's had a facelift since I was young and hung out there to play 42 with my vet school friends, but the flavor of the place is still there and Willie and Waylon still sing as clearly as they did in the late '70's. Somebody drink a longneck for me, will ya? (We don't get 'em here in the midwest).

Darn! I am leaving Los Angeles on the 23rd to drive my son's Ford Probe back to Texas. I have been wanting to go to Bush library! I hope you guys do this again sometime! We visited Nixon Library in Yorba Linda last Sunday and it is so awesome. So full of history. To think Nixon was run out of town for trying to hide a break in that someone else did. Look at all the Clinton/Gore/Rodham crimes and they are still running like the Energizer bunny! Will they never stop????

We have also visited the LBJ [PHOOEY] Library in Austin and the WONDERFUL Reagan Library in Calif. We are history junkies!
