The real question is: How do we protect our military from Linda Sanchez?

What Sanchez should have asked is how can we help our ex-military. This is in no respect speaking of John Muhammad in any way.

I do believe the guys that serve in combat in some of these God forsaken countries need plenty of help. Even the hardest of the hard. They may train for years to go out and do what they do, but once they actually are out there in jungles and desert, a life they have never lived before, with dead bodies all around them, being shot out, not a decent meal, not bathing.

The majority of these guys (including my son) that are going to lay their lives on the line for us are still in their teens, some gunho to go. My son is not in his teens, but he has already done 2 terms in Bosnia. I remember a letter from him during one winter, where he wrote, Mom, our ghettos would be considered Beverly Hills to this. The soldiers were sleeping in tents in the winter, rain, sleet, and snow. My son has been in the military for 10 years and next month he will sign up again. Whenever he decides to get out or retire, if he needs help, I hope help will be there for him. But then I know that it will.

For now they are safe. In two or four years who knows? Hopefully we can retire her and her sister by then. Her other two sisters, Feinstein and Boxer are clearer threats.

Your statement is very informative, however, I would never consider a Cuban, a Hispanic. I've always considered hispanic to be mexican.

That's exactly the problem. Names have been thrown around so carelessly by the media that names have lost all of their original meaning.

"Hispania" was the name of the Roman province of Spain just as "Britannia" was the name of the Roman province of Britain, Aegyptos was the name of the Roman province of Egypt and Africa was the name of the Roman province of North Africa.

Most Cuban Americans trace both sides of the family back to Spain and can tell you exactly what region of Spain each side of the family came from. Fidel Castro's paternal side of the family, for example, was from the northwest Spanish region of Galicia as was my own paternal side of the family. Cubans, therefore, are truly of "Hispanic" descent.

The Mexican Mestizo who is mostly of Pre-Columbian Indian stock wants nothing to do with the name "Hispanic" as it denotes the Spaniards who conquered his ancestors in the 1500's.

The name situation would be analogous to having, say, American Indians labelled "Britons" because the American Indians were conquered by English-speaking men whose roots went back to "Britannia" and the American Indians speak English today.

In such a scenario, both the American Indian and the actual British who come to the USA are stripped of their cultural heritage. The American Indian is saddled with the name of the hated conqueror. The British bloke, in turn, is left to wonder why, in the USA, "Britons" are expected to look like Cherokees and why he keeps being asked if his reservation runs a casino.

Here's something else I really have to ask: just how literate are the Mexican illegals in the SPANISH language?

According to U.N. statistics, in 1990, the illiteracy rate for Mexicans over the age of 25 was 12.7% for men and 20.4% for women.

The question then becomes: What is the sociological profile of the average Mexican illegal?

If the poorest of the poor are the ones flooding across the Rio Grande, then the illiteracy rate would probably be greater in that sub-group than in the general Mexican population.

Germany's Nazi past, in historical terms, was a recent event without any direct link to most Americans of German descent.

The German roots that produced Nazism in Europe produced American warriors such as General Dwight D. Eisenhower, Admiral Chester Nimitz and General Carl Spaatz, commander of the U.S Strategic Air Forces in Europe during World War II.

A more apt analogy may be our Catholic and Protestant ancestors burning each other at the stake for heresey and the quaint New England Puritans hanging and crushing twenty of their neighbors to death because of "witchcraft".

I remember one piece on Telemundo where two hispanic or latino soldiers were injured in combat, the anchor said that two off "ours" had been hurt, implying at the same time that they didn't consider the rest of the soldiers to be theirs. Liberalism is alive and well in the Spanish-language press corps, as well.

TV networks strive for as wide an international audience as possible so, of course, they want to appeal to everyone. From their web page, it appears that Telemundo broadcasts in 112 different TV markets.

In contrast, I remember seeing a bumper sticker while visiting in Miami a few years ago that said, "No me llames Hispano. Soy Cubano."
