The cultural references here aren't just for effect. Democrats have historically believed that their greatest possession is the culture--the Zeitgeist, what's goin' on. For example, in the party's long-running mythology, currently being bruited by people like Harry Belafonte, the liberating achievement of the civil rights movement in the 1960s invested them for all time with cultural supremacy, and because the mythology further holds that all Republicans fought to thwart the very idea of civil rights, the Republicans are forever shunned from approved political society.
Whats with this statement? Weren't DemocRATs the ones who fought hardest against the civil rights act...
Many of them did, but with republican help, they passed it.
Since they were in charge, they took credit and now blame republicans as if it was all their idea and they passed it over our objections.
The real problem is that they believe the lie.
Ask LBJ; if not for the GOP, there would BE no Civil Rights Bill. The Democrats in the South, led by one Al Gore, Sr., fought it tooth and nail.
Yes. More Republicans than Democrats voted for the Civil Rights Acts, and thereby should get the credit for their passage. But the liberal mythology would have it otherwise.
But the liberal mythology is, for the most part, composed of lies. What's one more?
