Mrs.Dole was getting cancer treatment back in 1996 the first time I met her. She was flying on Food Lion's Beech-jet from Charlotte to some famous clinic in Rochester Minn. And yes, she kept it quiet and did not want to be some "victim". She was with Jesse Helms, and Henry Kissinger for the trip. They were the best of friends. You wouldn't think so, but they really are. She was the most eloquent, kind, and relaxed person you would want to meet. And that was when the media eye was nowhere around.

The second time was with her other half. They just arrived in Charlotte on AFLAC's Falcon 50 during hubby's campaign. It was late and all us courier bums were waiting for incoming freight to go back out. She saw us and ran back into the plane with some extra staffers and brought us down the best catering spread I ever ate. She did not do it for any other reason than the fact she enjoys people. Any bitter or nasty comments about her are from people who know nothing of her.

That would be Mayo Clinic. My dad served in WW II in Dr. Charlie Mayo's US Army medic unit (think MASH - my dad said there really WAS a HotLips Houlihan-type woman in the unit ;-).
