As the CBS local News broadcast was signing off to go to the National news at 6:30 tonight ...they announced..."This just in....2 people in New York City hospital with symptoms of BUBONIC PLAUGE"! N0 detail yet.........

You are correct but, they didn't have antibiotics. It'll be another generation or two before it develops immunity. We're safe.

What is tragic about this is that, if our wonderful government had not fed us that crap about the anthrax victim "drinking from a stream while hunting" we would all be comfortable about this plague case being unremarkable.

99.9% chance this is nothing. Any doubt should be blamed on the disniformation jackass in the anthrax case.

Plague (Yersinia pestis) exists in many parts of the country. (Don't feed the chipmunks in AZ or CO).

People (yes, real Americans) occasionally come down with it. The course of disease depends on how one acquires the infection.

This isn't necessarily some terrorist thing, assuming these two people actually have bubonic plague.

NYC Medical Scare: Two Being Treated At Area Hospital For Bubonic Plague

(New York-WABC, November 6, 2002) — Two patients at a New York City hospital have been diagnosed with a dangerous disease not seen in decades. Eyewitness News has learned that doctors at Beth Israel Medical Center are caring for the two people who have the Bubonic plague. Jim Dolan reports from Beth Israel with more.

The Bubonic plague claimed millions of lives in Europe and Asia in the Middle Ages. Now sources confirm for Eyewitness News the probably presence of the plague in two patients here in New York. The pair is a married couple from New Mexico who were in the city on vacation.
Doctors tell Eyewitness News that a microbiology test confirmed their fears that the couple was indeed suffering from the Bubonic plague. The couple has been isolated to prevent the further spread of the disease.

Doctors say while the female patient is out of danger, her husband is in extremely critical condition. They say he was admitted with a fever of 105 degrees. High fever is one of the symptoms of the Bubonic plague.

The city and state health department, were joined by the Centers for Disease Control try in their investigation into how the couple contracted the disease. The state health department in Sante Fe, New Mexico, where the couple lives, tested rodents on their property this summer. Apparently many of those rodents tested positive for the Bubonic plague.

Doctors say they believe the couple was infected in their home state after sleeping in a sleeping bags that had been outdoors on their property for several weeks. Those sleeping bags are now being tested.

Officials say there are 20 to 30 cases of Bubonic plague worldwide each year. If caught early, the disease is very treatable, but it is often mistaken for a cold. If treatment is delayed, the plague can, of course, be fatal.

Last night, as I watched my state of New Jersey continue to be the butt of all the jokes, I consoled myself with the thought : " At least I live in the northeast where we don't have to worry about things like bubonic plague"

By the way - it's transmitted by fleas that bite rats, prarie dogs ( got to deal with that infestation of prarie dogs in my NJ backyard!), etc. Only the pneumonic form is transmitted human - to - human. These folks probably got it in NM and got critically ill a few days later.

Plague can be treated pretty easily. We usually have a few cases of it a year. Nothing to worry about.

Which is worse Numonic(sp) or Bubonic?

From an article I found the Bubonic is spread by rats and fleas and once a person has it and it gets in their lungs it becomes pneumonic.

"The symptoms were clear: swollen lymph nodes (buboes, hence the name), high fever, and delirium. In the worst case, the lungs became infected and the pneumonic form was spread from person to person by coughing, sneezing, or simply talking. From the time of infection to death was less than one week."

During the gold rush there was an outbreak of plague in San Francisco's Chinatown. A physician detected it and reported it to the city government, along with recomendations to contain it. The town fathers insisted that there was no plague in their fair city, refused to accept the report or institute a rat catching program.
