ENOUGH SCHADENFREUDE!
Me

I've detected way too much gloating up in here. It makes me uncomfortable and I wonder if it bothers anybody else.
I thank God the GOP did as well as it did, but I harbor no hatred for the opposition. For one thing, well, I just don't. I find it hard to hate somebody just because he'd pull a different lever in a voting booth. For another, if we did that, we'd be just like the worst, creepiest people we've seen in the Democrat party--the ones that held the Wellstone funerally or who passed out Oreo cookies to attack a black Republican in Maryland.
I can't stand that kind of hateful attack-dog stuff, and I want no part of it. The gloating I see here reminds me of it, and I hope that people will dial it back a bit, now that the first flush of victory has passed.
Or is it just me?

You've got the wrong word. Schadenfreud means enjoying another's misfortune
even though you got no direct benefit. Enjoying your own victory is not schadenfreud. But it can get to be gloating.

We're entitled to celebrate the election for a day. After Bush won in 2000, Gore and his friends didn't even let us celebrate.
But I agree with you as far as the behavior of public figures and Republican politicians goes. They should avoid gloating and over the longer term avoid triumphalism, or they will pay a big price. They should avoid taking their victory for granted, or they will kick the opportunity away.
I haven't heard any of them gloating. Nothing like the way the clintonoids always behave when they win. Anyone remember Bill Clinton's first inaugural celebration, and the way the media treated it?
I don't think President Bush will be inviting Hollywood starlets in to jump in the Lincoln bed.

Well, I'm here surrounded by RATS and I've not said one loud word of glee all day... except here on FR! I think we all deserve a day of joy. The RATS are not going to take this lying down and we will be under fire come tomorrow.
I'm glad I can celebrate with my buds here at FR... and bask in the glow of victory for a change. It feels good, really really good!
I'll be a humble lady tomorrow... ummmm maybe tonight, but now I just want to give a big high five.

I harbor no hatred for the oppositionMe neither....but I am damn glad that the Gephardts, Daschles, Leahys, Jeffords, Streisands and the rest of the obstructionists have got their come-up-ance.
And I'm going to savor it for a while.

All right, AL...'cause it's you.
Plus, I always give extra credit when anyone spells "schadenfreude" correctly!

As the originator of the Schadenfreude Thread here on FR, I'd like to point out that
Schadenfreude is an expression of
joy, not hatred. In other words, it's perfectly okay to celebrate the misfortune of the enemy's
cause, so long as that celebration does not involve hatred towards the enemy as a
person.
For the record: I don't hate anybody, liberal or conservative. But I do hate the various causes that liberals stand for: communism, socialism, liberalism, humanism, hedonism, atheism, etc. I will continue to express the "strange joy" I feel at seeing these diabolical causes destroyed.

You can feel whatever way you want to feel.
As for me, I can't help feeling joy to see so many dirtbag socialists defeated. At least the socialist scourge will be slowed a little - and for that I am happy.
I have a hard time not hating the people who want to destroy the Constitution, take away our inalienable God-given rights, confiscate more of my hard-earned money to fund their socialist schemes - money that my family deserves - not them, kill more babies and suck their brains into abortuary sinks, and to appease mad dictators and tyrants around the world. Finding joy in their defeat and their despair is a far cry better than shooting them, don't you think? Thank goodness we still have some semblence of a representative system within our Republic that allows the People to peacefully push back, for a time, the forces of tyranny.
I may be sitting in a cubicle at working, appearing as if I'm focused on my tasks. But, inside, I'm dancing for joy like a maniac with every post detailing the sadness and despair being experienced right now by the dirtbag Democrats.
Call it a character flaw - I don't care. Just don't take away my momentary joy, partypooper.
You can coddle and console the enemy if you prefer. As for me - and I know I should repent of this - but I prefer to "to crush my enemies, to see them driven before me, and to hear the lamentations of their women."

Rush said said on his show that
schadenfreude (according to a recent mental health study conducted in Germany) is "malicious glee over the misfortunes of others." According to this study, occasionally indulging in schadenfreude actually "contributes to good mental health."
LOLOLOL, ARClight--relax and enjoy good mental health today!!

I agree with Cicero -- this is a belated celebration, the one we were robbed of by Gore and his merry band of lawyers down in Florida -- I think we DESERVE 24 hours--heck maybe even 36 to celebrate -- esp. after the initial disappointment of Lautenberg/Torricelli winning in NJ -- I could do without the "I hope the Dems all slit their wrists and die" stuff...but hey ! whatever floats your boat :)

Who's gloating? I'm stuck in the Soviet Socialist People's Republic of Dumb-sses for another four years with Minister Joe Davis.
BUT I'M SUPER HAPPY ABOUT THE SENATE AND I LOVE PRESIDENT BUSH! THANK G-D FOR HIM.
To: ArcLight
I'm pleased at the set backs and losses the Democrats have suffered nationally. Being a patriot and a partisan, I feel no shame in being pleased.

Good response, and right on the money. There are more differences in conservatives and liberals than the fact that they pull different levers in voting booths; far more. Dims want what isnt theirs. And theyre more than willing to take it whatever the cost. Theyre also uniformly against the death penalty for violent, murderous criminals, yet are more than willing to murder innocent babies by the thousands, simply because they refuse to use birth control. To summarily excuse these atrocities under the guise of ideological differences is to be intellectually dishonest at best.
