In the past week we political types have been through, seen, heard, and said a lot. After all, it was election week. But some things I have heard and seen convince me that some people should just not be able to vote. For example, Florida, which ought be thrown out of the union along with California, voted a constitutional amendment to protect the rights of pregnant pigs to turn about. How many pig farms are there in Florida? Two, to be exact, and one of those is closing. Take New Mexico for another glaring example of common sense at work. This year there was a constitutional amendment (one amoung seven proposed - boy, that constitution must be really crappy!) that would protect the voting rights of idiots. I mean, "mentally underpriviledged". Why don't they just make them move to Florida? Another case that gave me pause occurred here in Virginia, where a senatorial candidate, an unqualified crackpot green party activist who could hardly even speak english, received 20,000 votes. To be sure, some of those were joke votes (I myself wrote in the name of one of my politically career minded buddies rather than vote for the unopposed liberal "in office til I die" candidate in my districts congressional race.) But jokes cannot account for 20,000 votes. Although Virginia's sense of humor is good, it isn't that good. Clearly, something needs to be done. But what? How can one reconcile the right to vote with limiting the rights of others? Did the framers really intend for a universal right to vote? Surely Jefferson didn't have morons, idiots, crazies, and swine in mind when he penned "created equal". Should someone be allowed to vote when they have repeatedly demonstrated the inability to successfully do so, or who have shown the penchant to give legal rights to the animal kingdom? Freepers, what do you think?
