I asked this on another thread, but I thought Indians were their own nations, exempt from taxes and some laws, etc., so how in the heck do they get to vote in US elections? Either they are citizens or they aren't. How can they not pay taxes and yet still get to vote, or is that only some tribes? I'm confused.

You should live in NY state where the INDIANS (and that's what the Oneida Indians call themselves) are trying to steal half of Central New York. They don't pay taxes but have a big gambling casino, hotels, gas stations, etc. and drive out other businesses who can't compete with them. Pataki did nothing about it. Now another Oneida tribe from Wisconsin, I think, has put a claim on several large businesses here. It's insane. I had to buy insurance for my house that guarantees me the price I paid for it in case they throw me off my land. Well, warrior princess isn't going without a fight. I don't know that it would ever come to that but they'll never get our place witout one big fight. We worked too hard to finally be able to buy one.

They pay Federal income tax. But they don't pay property tax, or tax from income generated off Tribal or trust land. Example: if you are an Indian cattle rancher and you run your cows on Tribal land, you don't pay tax on the money you make when you sell them.
