California Election results for governor

It appears to me that the GOP is consistently losing the statewide offices because of voting in three counties. Virtually the entire state went for Simon with the exception of Oakland, San Francisco, and Los Angeles counties.

From the standpoint of the number of counties taken, Simon did better than Lungren (though the popular vote was much different).

As a native Californian, although not currently living in my beloved state... I can only observe that while the rest of the Nation looks to President Bush for leadership and direction; The California GOP studies and worships Trent Lott methodologies.

Totally agreed. Sometimes the electorate has to go deeper into the valley before they realize they're going the wrong direction. I think huge strides can be made with minorities in the next few years because they are going to be the ones hurt most by the coming depression.

Bill Simon won in 40 of the 58 counties so actually Bill Simon won. Today, "Gay" Davis starts running for President and the dirty money will continue to flow. Lord have mercy on California.

It's going to be painful to California residents over the next 2-4 years, but it would have been painful under Simon as well. It's going to work out better for us in the long run.

I'm not so sure about that. Something that no one seems to be talking about is the fact that every bond measure on the ballot passed. With California's bond ratings already in the toilet, what are the implications of tens of billions of dollars of new debt obligations?

Not only is it going to be more expensive to issue these new bonds due to the lower ratings, but we will be paying the price for 20 to 30 years. Couple the new debt issues with the energy bonds and the huge bonds that passed in the last two elections and we have some major debt obligations that I don't see how we can handle. This has some serious implications for the financial future of California folks.

Election of 2004 Impact Gray Davis is running for President in 2004. George W. Bush must be making a calculation on the impact of this statewide election on the election of 2004. Davis will garner alot of support from California based tech firms, entertainment, and Clintonistas.

You assume that California isn't going to have a fiscal meltdown in the next couple of years. If all of Davis' screw-ups over the last 4 years come home to roost, he won't be able to mount a serious campaign.

I'm disappointed that Simon lost but maybe there is a silver lining. He won't be blamed for the coming crash...Davis will be.

The rank and file Latino voters are not hearing or responding to GOP campaign tactics. They are resonating with Democratic Party racial politics

The mean spirited politics of Wilson-Dornan-Tancredo- Jim Ryan in Illinois is what the Latinos see in the media. Every time a George Bush or Jeb Bush appears even slightly friendly, the mean spirited letters to the editor and emails pop up.

Not only does this mean spiritedness lose Latino votes, it loses even more votes from White women who are turned off by mean spiritedness.

There is no constitutional or logical reason in conservative thought for this mean spiritedness. It is totally unnecessary. But until our alleged friends either get smart, or compassionate (in their tone of voice) it will be a difficult, but winnable challenge to get the Latino vote.

Latinos in my area who went 100% for Bush in 2000 and local Republicans in 2001, went overwhelmingly agaisnt Jim Ryan this time.

As with all of us, Latinos are more motivated to vote against than to vote for.

The person who lost the election here in California was Bill Simon. Not the President. Bill Simon, alone. For months, I reported here on FR that Simon was running by far the worst political campaign imaginable. Yet few wanted to believe that Simon was going down in flames and taking most of the down-ticket Republicans with him. Politically naive "real" Conservatives kept making exucses for him, even though Simon and his campaign advisors were so inept they made the old Keystone Kops look like an elite police force in comparison!

I am so sick and tired of seeing people on the right side of the political spectrum excuse inept candidates just because they are "real" Conservatives. We who pour our sweat, tears, money, and voluntary labor into these campaigns deserve top-of-the-ticket candidates who know how to deliver votes. California is currently dominated by Democrats largely (though not exclusively) because we have had a string of pathetic candidates and party leaders going back to at least the early 1990's. Huffington, Fong, Campbell, Lungren, Simon -- the list goes on.

State senate and assembly races grow leaders for the future. In 1994, the Republican tide did not skip California. We elected the first Republican majority in the assembly since practically forever. What did those elected Republican leaders promptly do with their new-found power? They spent all of the next two years squabbling amongst themselves over who should be speaker, and squandering the chance to build on their gains. It's been all downhill for Republicans in this state ever since. The Republicans elected to Congress, like Cox, Drier, Cunningham, and others pretty much do squat to help build the party here at home. I refuse -- absolutely refuse -- to make excuses for the whole lot of them because, in the end, they betray you, and me, and all the volunteers who pour out their hearts to try to get out the Republican votes.
