Someone correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't there tons of evidence and didn't the victim positively identify the attackers?

Does anyone know why they didn't mention the Reyes guy?

I think a few things should be clarified here, even though they confessed, Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Kharey Wise, Yusuf Salaam and Raymond Santana in trial all claimed that a mysterious stranger named "Tony" actually committed the rape. They claimed they did not know him, that he was hispanic, and he came along and took over. Its been revealed that Matias Reyes nickname is "Tony", his friends and family all call him Tony, even in interviews regarding his past. However, in his recent confession, he got details of the attack wrong, including what he used to strike the jogger. The scars and injuries she suffered show that his claim of what he used and how he knocked her unconcious can't be true. A theory that has come up, is that the kids attacked her, beat her senseless, were going to rape her, and that he came along and finished the job, either way, the kids knew to many details in there confessions to the police (confessions that were done with the parents watching and able to stop at anytime) while Reyes has the DNA match. Thats why these kids haven't been released, nothing is adding up exactley and all that is avalable is theories.

One more note, the jogger has no memory of the attack, she suffered such severe head trauma, that she will never be able to recall the attack, in all likely hood, and has suffered some slight damage. She can not identify the attacker or the number or even time of attack.

Thanks for the additioonal info, especially re "Tony=Matias Reyes." It remains to be seen, however, whether DA Morgenthau, a very PC guy, will stand up to the media and the black supremacists demanding the attackers get exonerated and a multimillion-dollar payday.

The evidence came primarily from the attackers' statements, in which each incriminated the others. Re the victim, see #6.

They did, but they didn't know his real name (see #5), and in 1989, the time of the attack, DNA testing was very primitive, so police couldn't identify Reyes.

I vaguely remember reports of a white van with a couple of white guys seen near the scene of this horror. Hard to believe a group of young black men could do something like this. </sarcasm>

Although the media -- black and white -- usually follow the unofficial rule prohibiting ever naming a rape victim, every City Sun or Amsterdam News article on the case constantly repeated The Jogger's name. As a result, while white New Yorkers were unaware of her identity, virtually all black, and many Hispanic New Yorkers, knew her name.

It didn't stop there. In those days, whenever one of the daytime talk shows devoted a show to racial issues, Fat Al Sharpton's supporters always managed to be in the studio audience, and they always seemed to get hold of a microphone to spout their garbage. When Donahue did one such show during the Central Park Jogger Trial, one of these fine gentlemen stood up and, while pretending to ask his question, uttered the jogger's real name. He looked so smug and pleased with himself, I wished I could reach through the television screen and throttle him.
