COLORADO FREEPERS, CAN YOU HELP?
XENO

I apologize for the vanity but I need some advice. My sister in Colorado just tried to vote for Allard and was told that her registration was "cancelled" because she had moved and changed her name since the last election. She said she filled out the voter registration change card when she updated her driver's license after getting married last year but they only had the record under her maiden name and said therefore it has been "cancelled". I dont know the rules in Colorado, does anyone have advice as to what she can do besides going back and making a scene about the Denver D's denying her constitutional rights under the 19th amendment? Many thanks~!!

She could call the media, but unless she's Black and voting for a RAT they don't usually care.
Does she have any proof of registering, the media might like that.

Colorado is allowing provisional voting this year. That means they must allow you to vote and the the clerk for that county has 12 days confirm that the voter is allowed to vote in that county.

tell her to search the net for the website for secretary of state (or other voting bureaucracy) and see whether provisional ballots are available there

She should call the Secretary of State's office and commence screaming, at the same time, but on another phone, she should call KOA and continue screaming, and yet on another phone the Rocky Mountain News and the Denver Post. Perhaps someone would be willing to help her scream. Also, one of the TV stations would be delighted to come out and get some tape of her being 1) denied the right to vote because she got married and 2) screaming about it. I would keep going back, with a TV crew, until they let me vote. Can she find the voter registration certificate they should have sent her after she re-registered? I keep mine with my passport.

I showed up to vote and my name wasn't on their list ... but I received a postcard from county clerk asserting my polling place which indeed happened to be where I showed up. Because I had brought along that card to polling place, a phone call later and presto! they handed me a ballot. Does your sister have such a postcard?

She should call the license bureau where she updated her license and filled out the voter registration card and see if they keep a copy....if not ask them to please give you the number of your county election board and explain the situation to them. My husband holds an elected office and that is what I would do if it happened to me.

I should have added that we live in Ohio but I would still make those calls and if the election board does not have the update on you, politely ask for the Secretary of State's office number....if they are too busy, call information. The Secretary of State is in charge of the state's elections. I learned a long time ago that you can get alot further by not screaming!

THANK YOU FREEPERS! I just got confirmation that my sister has successfully voted for Allard! She made a call to the county election office who told her that she could go to the polling place and vote using the provisional ballot, and at the same time make the name change (again). Here is a thank you from her email that I am passing along:
Thanks for pushing me on this. I thought I'd just have to let it go for this year but I'm glad that I was able to vote and now everything's squared away for the 2004 election.
GO ALLARD!!!!!
