According to sources in Yemen, Ali Qaed Senyan al-Harthi, also known as Abu Ali, was one of the men in the car, all of whom were Yemenis suspected of links to al Qaeda. Abu Ali is one of two men that Yemeni security forces have been trying to hunt down for questioning since 9/11 attacks.

According to Gulf intelligence sources, the attack was carried out by four U.S. Navy F/A-18 "Hornet" fighter bombers launched from the American aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln out at sea in the Arab Gulf.

The aircraft circled off the Yemen shore for several hours until the target was spotted and they were ordered to attack. During the long flight the aircraft refueled in the air from a large U.S. Air Force Boeing tanker aircraft based in Saudi Arabia.

Once the al-Qaeda assassination team was spotted headed for their attack on the American ambassador, the American CIA commander in Yemen gave the order to strike. The four "Hornet" aircraft flew in from the sea at high speed, and as they approached the target two of them flew low. Each of these two jets launched one television-guided missile. At least one of the two missiles hit the pickup truck in the cab, while the second missile apparently missed entirely. The attacking aircraft turned around and made a slow flight over the burning wreckage before joining their two fellows and heading off to sea.

Media reports said that local farmers had spotted a glimmering object high in the sky for several hours before the attack and following it. It is now suspected that this was a small unmanned airplane of the type used by the American forces for spying in Afghanistan and Iraq. These aircraft carry special video cameras and send back live television of the area they are over to the American commanders far away, and are used for tracking targets and for controlling attacks.

The official told Reuters in Washington that a Central Intelligence Agency drone carried out Sunday's attack on a car carrying the six which Yemen said included one of two key suspects sought as leading al Qaeda operatives in the Arab country. The dead man, Qaed Senyan al-Harthi, also known as Abu Ali, was suspected of involvement in the 2000 suicide bombing of the U.S. warship Cole in a Yemeni port that killed 17 U.S. sailors.

Washington blames that blast in Aden and the September 11 attacks in the United States on the Saudi-born bin Laden, whose ancestral home is Yemen.

Exclusive: U.S. kills six Al-Qaeda members on their way to assassinate American ambassador

Six alleged al Qaeda members, including one of the main suspects being hunted by Yemen for alleged links to Osama bin Laden, were killed when their car exploded, a source close to Yemen's government said on Monday.

The source said that it was not clear what had caused Monday's car explosion in the Marib oil-producing province, 170 km east of Sanaa. The official said the car was moving when it exploded and it appeared to have been carrying explosives.

However, Gulf sources said the car was hit by an American missile in a well planned operation after the U.S. intelligence found out the six were on their way to kill the American ambassador in Yemen. The blast coincided with a visit to Marib by the ambassador Edmund J. Hull, who returned to Sanaa on Monday as scheduled, a source close to the U.S. embassy said.
