Official: CIA Killed Al Qaeda Suspects in Yemen
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A missile fired by an unmanned CIA (news - web sites) drone hit a car believed to be carrying suspected al Qaeda members in Yemen Sunday and killed several occupants, a U.S. official said Monday.
Mon Nov 4, 5:18 PM ET A Predator Unmanned Aerial Vehicle is seen with a Hellfire-C laser guided missile under one wing in this file photo from a February 21, 2001 test flight at Nellis Airforce Base in Nevada. A missile fired by an unmanned CIA (news - web sites) drone hit a car believed to be carrying suspected al Qaeda members in Yemen November 4, 2002 and killed several occupants a U.S. official said November 5. Six alleged al Qaeda members were believed killed including a key suspect in the bombing of the USS Cole (news - web sites). While the CIA is known to operate armed Predator aircraft, it could not be confirmed if the Predator was used in this attack. (USAFMC/Reuters)
The official, who asked not to be identified, told Reuters the American military was not involved in the attack, which reports from Sanaa said killed six alleged al Qaeda members, including a key suspect in a bombing attack on the U.S. warship Cole in Aden two years ago.
"As I understand it, it was an agency drone" that conducted the weekend strike, said the U.S. official, who did not provide any details.
The Defense Department and CIA refused to comment on the incident, but Yemen's news agency reported in Sanaa that a car explosion had killed six alleged members of al Qaeda. The radical Muslin group led by fugitive Osama bin Laden (news - web sites) is blamed by Washington for the devastating attacks on America in September of last year.
Talk about putting an end to those ridiculous criminals involved in police chases!
Just goes to show that the combination of affirmative action hiring practices, makeup and hairstyles, and cheap GenX American journalism degrees don't add up to a hill of beans at the major TV and cable networks compared to FREE REPUBLIC.
Of course, one does realize they have to program their news in such a puerile way so that it is grasped by the average American audience segment with the mind level of a 14 year old-- in order to sell their products. That can account for some of their handicap, IMHO.
Even CNN, Fox, BBC have nothing that Western intel. picked up that the (6) were on their way to make a professional hit on our senior American in Yemen yesterday. It will be here on FR for three or four more hours before it runs as a "breaking" ticker on one of those pathetic networks.
Good hunting, boys!!! And it's really fitting that the terrorist scum were killed with Hellfire missiles, because that's where they're going!!
Sue's education is as a journalist, not a technical type. She listens to a techno-geek describe a test, and tries to translate what she hears into layman's English. Sometimes, something gets lost in the translation. However, I assure you, she is a dedicated public servant doing her best to put out a positive image of the Air Force to the public. She provided a lot of positive publicity for the program I worked on.
From US Embassy, Sanaa, Yemen website: "Edmund J. Hull was sworn in as the American Ambassador to the Republic of Yemen on September 17, 2001 by Secretary of State Colin L. Powell. Previously, Mr. Hull served as the U.S. Department of State's Acting Coordinator for Counterterrorism. Mr. Hull was instrumental in mobilizing international support for sanctions, including UN Security Council Resolution 1333, against terrorists and countries supporting terrorism. He has also led U.S. delegations to meet with the UN, the G-8, and the EU, as well as India, Canada, Japan, Yemen, Israel, the Palestinian Authority, the UK, Central Asian states, and Spain. He also joined Under Secretary Pickering in launching the U.S.-Russian Working Group on Afghanistan."
