Jewish Defense League leader Irv Rubin tried to commit suicide....

KFI640 reports he slit his wrists, then jumped off some balcony....in critical condition

Jewish Defense League leader Irv Rubin, jailed on charges of plotting to bomb a mosque and an Arab-American congressman's office, was hospitalized Monday after some type of accident while in federal custody, authorities said.

"There was some sort of accident and he fell and he's currently in the hospital," said Bill Woolsey, spokesman for the U.S. marshal's office.

Rubin's condition was not known, Woolsey said.

Rubin was to appear in court Monday for a hearing in his case.

Rubin and associate Earl Krugel were arrested Dec. 11 on charges of plotting to bomb the King Fahd mosque in suburban Culver City and an office of Rep. Darrell E. Issa, R-Calif.

Rubin and Krugel were arrested after an FBI informant delivered an explosive powder that authorities believed was the last component in making pipe bombs. The charges carry up to 40 years in prison upon conviction.

Rubin, who by his own account has been arrested more than 40 times, joined the JDL early in the 1970s and quickly moved up, becoming chairman in 1985.

In 1989, the leader of the rival Jewish Defense Organization was charged with firing shots at Rubin and wounding three others in New York. Mordechai Levy was convicted of assault.

According to his biography, Rubin learned to fight anti-Semitism while growing up in Montreal, "where some hotel owners and other business people hung signs reading 'No Dogs or Jews Allowed' on their doors and where French Canadian schoolchildren taunted him because he was Jewish."

His family emigrated in 1961 and he became a U.S. citizen and joined the Air Force in 1966, serving four years.

In 1973 he served in Israel's civil defense corps during the Yom Kippur War.

The JDL, whose symbol is a raised fist inside a Star of David, has the motto "Never Again," referring to the World War II murder of 6 million Jews. It was founded in 1968 by Meir Kahane to mount armed response to anti-Semitic acts in New York City.

The group was suspected in a 1985 bombing in Santa Ana that killed Southern California Arab anti-discrimination leader Alex Odeh, but no arrests were ever made.

For a minute I thought this guy was with the Anti-Defamation League. That would be good news.

This doesn't pass the smell test.

"There were immediate conflicting reports about Rubin's condition. His wife, Shelley, and son, Ari, told reporters they were told by Rubin's lawyers that Rubin had died in surgery after slashing his neck with a razor and jumping over a railing as he was called out of his cell at the federal Metropolitan Detention Center. They said he fell up to 18 feet."

I know Irv Rubin. He is a bigmouth, but no murderer.

I personally believe he just managed to piss off the wrong people one time too many. The poor shmuck not only was set up like a bowling pin, but now it appears they (the people he pissed off) don't even want this to get to trial.

His defense team is smart and agressive. They would not back off or back down. They are acquiring FBI doc's about his investigation and the informants who set his ass up. Things must have been getting a little to close to home for the scumbags. I feel sorry for him, and more for his poor wife.

The poor sot.

How is it that I've never heard of this Darrel Issa guy before? He's from my own state. I looked at his website, and he seems like a good Republican on so many levels, but I found an article on Polical USA that says he has made comments defending the legitimacy of Hezbolla. I can think of a number of Republicans (just about every regular freeper) who would not stand for such ideas coming from our grand old party. Anyone familiar with this guy?

< "innocent people"

I don't know... American Mosques harbor and aid many known Arab terrorists and terrorist groups.

He's orginally from Cleveland, moved west. He's a pretty solid guy, ACU rating of 84%. He's definitely supportive of the Lebanese, but that's his blood. This article from a Jewish paper is a lot more sympathetic. The alleged pro-Hezbollah comments came from the Iranian government news agency, not a reliable source.

Frankly though, I don't care if he's anti-Israel and totally pro-PLO. He's an elected Congressman (a Republican, no less) and if Rubin et al were really plotting what they are accused of they are just as guilty of terrorism as any Al Qaeda member plotting to blow up a synagogue and Henry Waxman's offices and they deserve the exact same penalty if convicted.

By way of some clarification perhaps, I wonder how many American Muslims are not Islamists.

Yeah, sort of like Vince Foster and Ron Brown.

The large majority of them, I'd say. Most come here in order to not have to live under Sharia. They're highly unlikely to want to bring it here.

Seriously. there is something wrong with this story.

A lot wrong with it. I've looked at it a bit, and I believe the arrest was a sop to Darrell Issa. After that, of course, it has become a rallying case for every corrupt and traitorous islamist and nazi within and outside the government. It is a staple of every Aryan Nations hole on the net, for example.

A few of the odd things about the case:

It all hinges on an "informant", who told the FBI that he had delivered gunpowder to Rubin. Gunpowder is'nt really prime bombmaking material, and is found in the possession of every handloader in the world.

The informant was supposed to be a member of JDL and a former Marine. However, looking at written material by that individual, he doesn't seem to be Jewish at all. And no, I'm not going to post the stuff here, or his name :).

The FBI, at one time, seemed to have "lost" him - at least they claimed not to know his whereabouts. That may have been a ploy to obstruct the legal defense, though - corruption at high enough levels can make that happen.

His name doesn't seem Jewish either. On the other hand, a Marine who converted to Islam and refused to go fight in desert storm bears the same name. He was court-martialled for attacking an officer in connection with that, and got - I think - 16 months jailtime.
