One of the "five pillars" of Islam is Ramadan, a month-long period of fasting from sunrise to sunset. For American Muslims and others around the world it begins on November 6th. One in six persons on the face of the Earth will celebrate Ramadan. Some will do so with fervor, others, more secular, will not.
It is instructive to know how the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) describes the event. "Muslims look forward to Ramadan as a period of spiritual reflection and renewal," says Omar Ahmad, board chairman of CAIR. The fast "is performed to learn discipline, self-restraint and generosity, while obeying G-d´s commandments."
Another religious feast, Passover, was being celebrated by a group of family and friends in Israel this year when it was interrupted by an Islamic terrorist who killed many attending the event. The utter contempt that Islam holds for all other faiths is incomprehensible to our minds. In September, as Christians were worshipping in a Karachi, Pakistan church, gunmen walked in and killed seven of them. Later that month, as Hindu worshipers were gathered in a temple in western India, Muslim gunmen killed at least thirty of them and wounded another 45. In Russia, Chechen, i.e. Islamic, warriors took over a theatre full of people, resulting in the deaths of more than a hundred hostages.
So, when CAIR tells us that Ramadan is about "discipline, self-restraint and generosity" the question must be asked, where are Muslims exercising these qualities these days?
What kind of generosity is it to have relentlessly attacked the Jews of Israel before and since the establishment of that tiny nation?
What kind of generosity is it to teach thousands of Muslim children to know only hatred for the "infidel"?
What kind of self-restraint does it require to not bomb and kill vacationers in Bali?
What kind of discipline is at work to commit suicide for the sole purpose of killing innocent people by flying commercial jets into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon?
CAIR couldn´t even exercise self-restraint when it inflated the number of Muslims it says reside in America. Its news release says "seven million" while all other studies indicate it is far closer to 2.8 to 3 million at most.
What makes me crazy every time I read one of their releases is the way they always start, "In the Name of G-d, the Compassionate, the Merciful " Worldwide Islam is in short supply of compassion and mercy these days.
And, finally, the really BIG question. Will Ramadan give Americans and the rest of the world a break from the ceaseless attacks by Muslims who believe that Jihad requires them to wage war on all non-believers until they submit to Islam? Don´t count on it.

The 1973 Arab sneak attack on Israel, which we usually call "The Yom Kippur War", is referred to, in the Arab world, as the Ramadan War. Pretty good evidence of the sort of restraint and generosity that marks this event.
Let's roll!
