America's Sunday Best: First Flight 93, now the sniper: Bible teachers save the day

Did God have a hand in the capture of the Washington sniper suspects?

For Ron Lantz, the 61 year-old truck driver who found the two men now charged with the string of murders, this is more than an academic question. He wasn't the only one to phone in finding the 1990 Caprice parked at a Maryland rest stop two weeks ago, but he takes it as a matter of faith that the Lord led him to that car.

I think this is a well written essay that certainly brings up an overlooked attribute of today's heros, their faith.

They asked for God's help in catching the culprits.

Took his time, didn't He? Are the families of those killed supposed to draw some kind of comfort from this? God had better things to do than help catch them before they killed MY daughter?

Get back to me when He makes a pillar of fire appear over a bad guy's head BEFORE he kills anyone.

Even a rudimentary understanding of religion in general and Christianity in particular is such that a believer knows that it is his or her choice to follow God, as it is everyone's choice to do so.

God does not 'pull strings'. People are not merrionettes in some play.

What is sometimes described as a black line divides the human heart: we are free to choose good or evil, for if we were forced to choose and not drawn of our own free will we would not be making the choice of salvation. Salvation cannot be compelled; if it were, there would be no evil in the world.

Faith is, by definition, "believing without seeing.". You ought to try it sometime, rather than mock those who do believe.

It seems that the snipers were stopped numerous times by police, but were undetected. Instead a prayerful trucker had discerning eyes.

Let's not forget that God sacrificed His own Son for each repentant sinner. No one has the right to demand that God spare their child, since God didn't give Himself special treatment.

In this life it rains on the just and unjust.

As for me, I am proud to be a Sunday School teacher, because it gives me something in common with these uncommon men.

ccmay: your daughter was among the victims of the snipers? If yes, my condolences.

IncPen: I have not yet observed any indication that God is in the business of saving lives, nor any discernable relationship between piety or innocence -or their polar opposites- and any worldly effect, any more than I have noticed that He gives a tinker's dam about which football team wins the superbowl.
Some people seem to need to give credit to God when good things happen. To me, this seems just as blasphemous as blaming Him when bad things happen. It is not our place to assign divine causality or interference either way to anything. The best we can do is have faith in God and that He has an overarching plan, the full shape of which we cannot truly know.

Dear Pokey, I wish the many people on your ping lists could be alerted to this article. We all need to read positive news whenever it gets published.

Agreed.

#4..Your question takes my breath away.

If indeed one of the victims was your daughter, my heartfelt condolences, and I pray understanding & love will clear your heart from this hurt.

If, however, you are simply being rhetorical or.....gasp...blasphemous......

...may God have mercy.

I think you have no clue to Him, and I pray someday you will.

No, I was being rhetorical, and probably blaspheming too. Luckily nobody I know was injured or killed.

It's like when a plane crashes, and two hundred fifty people including innocent little babies die in flaming agony, but one guy in the back of the plane lives and tells the TV reporters, 'It's a MIRACLE! God was really looking out for me!'

I think this is primitive magical thinking, just one step removed from tribal witchcraft, as well as deeply insulting and hurtful to the families of those who died. What, they didn't pray hard enough?

Politicians and preachers who take credit for the rain had better be prepared to be blamed for the drought.

If it helps--two cents theology--

This world has been given over to evil to have its day and dominion. Generally, God waits to be invited because that's the gentlemanly thing to do. Jesus said, "Pray without ceasing." If we could manage something close to that, we might manage to thwart more wickedness. It is also the business of Christians to praise God for goodness and blessing when it happens.
