Notably, despite months of Democratic attacks accusing him of backing Social Security privatization, Mr. Coleman defended President Bush's idea to let younger workers invest some of their payroll taxes in stocks and bonds to build richer retirement savings. But he said he would "not vote for anything that cuts one dime" from what beneficiaries have paid into the system or what they have been promised.

Did anybody in the debate point out that Mondale has a history of supporting privatized Social Security accounts?

Mr. Coleman, a Democrat-turned-Republican, repeated his campaign theme that "the future is now" and that the old politics of rigid partisanship and gridlock had to be overcome by problem-solvers who can move legislation through.

Can you say, "Jim Jeffords"?

Is this the best that Carl Rove can do?

Sheesh.

WHAT A WONDERFUL WORLD

I see candidates of Green, libertarians too
Independents, Republicans too
And I think to myself, what a wonderful world

I see a debate, or two, without seniors' frights
Without all the lies, that demagogues might
And I think to myself, what a wonderful world

The Consitution party, so moral and so right
Can debate their positions, without a partisan fight
I see patriots exchanging ideas, saying "here's what I'd do"
They're really saying, "we're all red white and blue"

I don't see Bubba fake cryin', Daschle lyin'
Davis bribin', Al Gore sighin'
And I think to myself, what a wonderful world
Yes, I think to myself, what a wonderful world

Oh yeah
What a wonderful world

Well, considering all the radio experience Coleman has from hosting many of Joe Soucheray's Garage Logic shows, we may be pleasantly surprised!!

I don't think there will be a debate. Clearly, if the Dems thought he would do well, they would have had him out there last night. They are limiting his public exposure, and hoping he can win based on the public's perception of who he used to be, combined with the sympathy factor.

MPR would be Mundale's home turf.

Remember Stockdale? At the least, even he showed up. "Who am I? Why am I here?"

The second their internal polls show Fritz down outside of the margin of error (I am guessing he is down but within already), they will agree to the debate.

And it will be on Sunday.

It would be a high-stakes gamble. Their only hope is that Mondale wouldn't do as badly in the debate as the damage from refusing to debate at all.

Maybe they hope to pump him up with enough one-liners in the next two days so that he appears to be sharp. Tough challenge.

Did you see the debate? I'd like to know, from people who watched, whether the Indendent and Green candidates were 'good' enough to siphon votes from Mondale.

"[Republican lawmakers] charged that he was trying to avoid a debate and "play out the clock" with only three more days remaining in a race that both sides said was too close to call."

They have every right to, because that's exactly what Mr. "I left my brain in 1979" Mundane is doing.

There's a link to the debate thread in #12. The entire thing was a hoot and a half, and it's still under 300 posts so it's not a horrificly long read.

But in answer to your question, No. At first I thought the Greenie had a real good chance of drawing the hard-left voters away from Mondale. Plus he was blind and Native American. But then he picked his nose on camera, and when I say "picked his nose" I mean he went drilling like we're gonna drill ANWR...I figure that will turn off even the unwashed braindead commie college students who might have preferred him to Wellstone, let alone to Mondale.

The green guy was a real piece of work. He wore dark glasses the whole time, suggesting that he was blind (which is OK) or a loonie-tune, which is how he acted. "I don't keep any guns in my lodge." "If people want to hunt they should use a bow and arrow." Of course, this is Minnesota, so he's probably appealing to some. <sigh> The Indie seemed rational, other than bad politics.
