Actually, no.

First of all, we are a Constitutional Republic which utilizes representative democracy.

This is extremely different from the 'mob rule' of a pure democracy which can tyrannically denie the rights of the 'minority'.

A pure democracy is defined best as 3 wolves (pro abortion) and 1 sheep (pro life) setting down to vote "what's for dinner".

What would be the effect if all the American bishops made similar statements this weekend?

Speaking of creating cardinals, the time is upon us when we need the Holy Father to create an American metropolitan or patriarch (and make the USCCB subordinate to him.

No bishop is subject to another bishop, except to the Holy Father himself. There are metropolitans in place already; they're called archbishops. They cannot, however, subjugate any bishop within their province to themselves.

The Pope is a firm believer in collegiality and would never humiliate an episcopal conference. There is no such thing as a "mini-Pope."

With all due respect.

That picture seems to be sadly accurate.

Well, for openers, the LeftPressMonopoly would go absolutely bonkers--more than over the homosexual predator-priest story.

Then the IRS would move to lift the tax exemption of the Church.

Then a bunch of "Catholics" would leave the church.

All in all, it would be a very good thing.

That means that according to this bishop, over 4 out of every 5 Americans is evil. Is there something wrong with this picture, perhaps?

No, you defined it ... 4 out of 5 POLITICIANS are evil.

Seems about right to me.

Bishop is the highest position in the Church, e.g., the Pope is the Bishop of Rome. The others are titles: Monsigeur, Archbishop, and Cardinal.

Dear Siobhan,

The Archbishop of Baltimore, who is currently William Cardinal Keeler, is considered the senior bishop in the United States. It is a precedence of honor only, though when the episcopacy of the United States has held Plenary Councils, the pope has always given the presidency of these councils to the Archbishop of Baltimore.

If the pope were to have a primate in the United States, I think the office would be tied to a specific see, and most likely would be Baltimore.

I will never knowingly vote for a person who is acceptable with the killing of children (I refuse to call them pro-anything). If it comes to a choice between two candidates that will accept the killing of children, then I either do not vote that box, or I write myself in.

Actually, archbishops are metropolitans, which mean they are organizationally first among bishops in a province. They are allowed to wear the pallium, a ring of cloth worn over the vestments at Mass. They are similar to Vicar Foranes within a diocese (otherwise known as "Deans"). Monsignors and Cardinals possess titles.

I used to vote for a few "good" democrats. Then I realized that they can't be any "good" when they identify with a party that promotes death and immorality.

That doesn't mean that I vote for every republican, but I certainly don't vote for any democrats.

In this respect, the archbishop drew a distinction between the abortion issue and other political questions, on which reasonable people might differ.

And he is absolutely right. There are no shades of grey on that issue. You can't straddle the line between good and evil, you either stand with God or you're standing with the enemy of our souls. I'm an independent Baptist, but I pray that God will bless and prosper this archbishop for taking a Godly, public stand against the # 1 evil of our time. I only wish every pastor, priest, and rabbi would take an equally firm and courageous stand.

Total opposition to the American holocaust is the bottom line for me and my family. We will not under any circumstance vote for a pro-abortion candidate even if he or she is 100% correct on every other issue known to man. If that means sitting out an election now and then, so be it. There are no shades of grey when the issue is mass murder of unborn human beings.
