Congressmen want paper ballots in Broward...(Florida Dems cry for PAPER BALLOTS!)

Two U.S. congressmen sought federal intervention on Thursday to prevent another election meltdown in Broward County after state officials rejected the last possible option to ease the crush of voters at the polls next week.

Reps. Peter Deutsch, D-Fort Lauderdale, and Alcee Hastings, D-Miramar, asked U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft to pressure the state to allow paper ballots to ease long lines at the precincts on Tuesday. They are threatening to go to court and allege that Florida is violating the federal Voting Rights Act.

Our county (Manatee) has and still uses optical scan ballots. I took this to mean that the demonrats want to actually have the option of an old fashioned paper ballot where the voter marks the choices with an 'X'.

I guess they are finding it a little difficult to stuff a ballot box, or "find" votes, or count chads, or any other means fair or foul to cheat, if they don't have paper ballots. This is just sickening. I have already resigned myself to the fact that the Florida election will be close (with hundreds of dead people voting for McBride) and when it dosen't go their way, they will find, or create a problem and scream about it from the top of the tallest mountain.... er... Ficus Tree.

Deutsch and Hastings wrote Ashcroft that waits of two to three hours would be excessive and would constitute a violation of the Voting Rights Act by disenfranchising voters.

Making a naughty Dem. list, and checking it twice....

Please let me know if you want on or off my "'til election day" Fla. ping list.

The judges did rule one item against the dems. They denied the petition that the paper ballots be pre-marked for McBride. (/sarcasim)

It's killing the Dems because they aren't smart enough to beat the computerized system yet. The public schools don't have enough teen aged computer wizards to cheat for the Dems. The article said,"But the county would need more than 2,000 additional machines to allow each voter to spend the 13 minutes it takes to read the 11-page ballot from start to finish." I just got back from casting my vote in Pinellas county and it took me three minutes because I took my notes in with me. Anyone who waits to get in the voting booth to read the amendments deserves a long wait.

Amen. In California the ballots are ridiculously long in most years because of all the referenda, but each county sends out detailed sample ballots well before the first absentee ballots are mailed.

I agree that the Rats are protesting because long waiting times prevents multiple voting. That's the "secret sauce" they have used for years in South Florida. It's still the easiest way to stuff ballot boxes. Voter are never purged from the rolls when they die or move, and the Rats simply have a caravan of people going from polling place to polling place voting in the names of these people.

I like the way they do elections in Canada. I read that they have paper ballots, but there are no more than about 200 voters in each precinct and the votes are counted on the spot after the polls close, with watchers from all parties present for the counting. Neighborhood election workers and poll watchers know when a stranger is trying to vote for someone else, and they know when someone has just moved in and when they are lying. There is almost no vote fraud in Canada.

Well, the fact they are questioning it makes it seems so - but they will have their 'fixers' in place by 2004.

Personally, I like the idea of paper ballots. I like the idea there will be something to look at and recount. I am not comfortable with my vote being cast into the nether world of computers where anything can and will happen to it.

My age talking --maybe. But what recourse would someone have if this happened.

Just hand them a hand full of chads and tell them to start counting.

I heard today, probably on Fox News, that during the "early voting", some voters were taking two hours to vote!!!!

Judas Priest, will someone please pull the plug on these people?

Elections Supervisor Miriam Oliphant, who ceded much of her authority after the bungled Sept. 10 primary, said she would have offered longer hours and equipped the offices with more machines by now if she had been in complete control. But she conceded it was too late to make those changes.

That b-tch -- whose authority was yanked from her after the primary by the DEMOCRATIC-CONTROLLED COUNTY COMMISSION, after being sponsored for office by County Democratic Party -- is responsible for experienced poll workers quitting (telling little old ladies to switch to good-awful neighborhoods where you wouldn't want your grandmother to go at 6 a.m. on less 24-hours notice), voting machines being found in the street after the primaries, using public money to hire her dumb-as-dirt cronies and redecorate her office, and making a mockery of elections -- but she would have solved everything.

The Sun-Sentinel carried a full-page story scorching Oliphant after the primaries -- and they dare to print this quote? Aaarrrrgh!

I have never been so sick of the democrats as I am right now. First they threw fits down here because people couldn't follow a simple arrow to vote so we had to spend MILLIONS on electronic touch screen machines to make voting easier.

Now they want paper ballots - well there is an old saying and if I said it completey Jim would ban me so you'll have to figure it out.

You can want in one hand and $hit in the other.

I voted earlier in the week in Miami-Dade county. It took me 5 minutes to complete the ballot (yes I timed it) and I did read through the amendments to make sure they were worded the same as my notes (hey, this is Dade ya know).

From start to finish it took me maybe 10 minutes to vote. And oh yea, BTW, some of you might have heard how the democrats are claiming the GOP is disenfranchising black voters by asking them for two id's before voting. Well guess what? I was asked to present 2 ID's before I could vote. But since I'm a white female of no particular ethnic group, that's ok.
