Their culture is collapsing, in Egypt in the 50's 3000 books were published, today 300 are published a year.

At the same time Egypt is opening a new Library of Alexandria. Totally modern, world-class. It is expected to be a leader in the world, especially for electronic publications.

I thought it would have been the equivalent of calling someone a Lutheran, Calvinist, or Wesleyan. Now that I know, I will use the term more regularly, along with "infidel" (a personal favourite) and "Saracen dog".

Here is as good a place as any to ask .... Is it Moslem or Muslim?

It used to be "Musslemen". Say about the time when Thomas Jefferson, with some help from the US Navy, The USS Constitution (Old Ironsides) and Stephen Decater in particular, kicked that part of them most exposed when they pray towards Mecca. All the old documents from that era refer to them as "Musslemen". "Mohammadan" was also used, as recently as the middle years of the 20th century.

to friends and relatives who are "in the squishy middle" with opinions about
