Run DMC's Jam Master Jay shot to death in Queens, NY

Posted on 10/30/2002 8:15:13 PM PST by BurbankKarl

Kind of shocked to hear this one...Run DMC kept their music relatively clean when all the Gangsta Rap hit in the last 80s...

NEW YORK — Legendary hip-hop DJ Jam Master Jay of Run-DMC was shot and killed in Queens on Wednesday (October 30), according to the group's camp.

Police have confirmed that two men were shot inside a studio on Merrick Boulevard at 7:30 p.m. local time and say the victims have not been identified.

According to police, one man was dead on arrival after being rushed to a local hospital. Representatives for Run-DMC claim the victim was Jam Master Jay, a.k.a. Jason Mizell.

Police did not disclose the condition of the other victim.

Right before the 2002 MTV Video Music Awards in August, Darryl McDaniels, a.k.a. Jay's longtime musical compatriot DMC, said that the Queens group was going to hit the studio and road for an album and tour in commemoration of their 20th anniversary (see "Run-DMC Plan Return To B-Boyism On Anniversary LP").

Run-DMC, who recently wrapped a tour with Kid Rock and Aerosmith, were scheduled to perform Thursday (October 31) as part of the half-time festivities at a Washington Wizards home game.

You forgot The Beastie Boys and LL Cool J. Maybe I wasnt as white as I thought back then ;-)

Bus' it! Bus' it!

The Beastie Boys definitely made their way into my suburbia but LL never quite got to the level of DMC or the Boys.

I was a fan of the Beastie Boys like most high school/college students around that time, but when they decided they needed to start spouting off on political matters they dropped pretty far down on my list.

Can someone more familiar with Run DMC tell me if this is good news or bad news?

I don't ever consider the murder of a citizen good news but believing you are asking if this man was a good or bad influence on society I would say that this news is bad.

| I do not like or care for rap music but I happen to know just a bit about this group because I live in the neighborhood he was orginally from and though he did move to a better area it is still close by. In addition my sons are college age and keep up on this stuff. They told me long ago about how RUN DMC was a group that did not encourage violence in their lyrics. An AP article today says, "Run DMC and their songs were never about violence. The group promoted education and unity.". Of course I am not personally familiar with their songs but there you have it.

In addition the article said that he often let people record in his studio free of charge. My sons also had me watch a portion of some bio type show on the man a few years back and they shared on it how this guy also found Christ and went on to work in some sort of ministry. I definetely don't have all the facts but that's what I do know.

Hope this helps.

These guys were the pioneers of rap and rock fusion. Their collaboration with Aerosmith on 'Walk This Way' set the tone for spin-off genres of music, making the way for artists such as Kid Rock, Limp Biskit, etc. Run DMC also stuck to the 'old school' style and avoided gangster rap.

The country is at war and you people worry about balck gangster rapists. Crazy!

While I'm all for homeschooling it appears there is a gap in your education in regard to this man and the group with which he worked. I would not in associate this man in anyway with gangster rapists. (Is your last word in that sentence "rapist" referring to "rap" or "rape"?) In fact, his life was all about being AGAINST that type of lifestyle and music.

Any loss of innocent human life is bad news.

Amen to that! May God grant his wife, parents, his three children and his friends with peace and comfort during this difficult time.

I'm link-challenged, but if you go to www.timesunion.com, the story is right there.

lilsparky you think YOU'RE link challenged! When I read your comment above it never occurred to me you were referring to a hyperlink. I took it that you couldn't figure out what the link was between the two rap shootings of last night!

It wasn't until I saw Teacher's response to you here providing the hyperlink that I realized what your statement meant. I know how to do HTML but I think I'm the one link challenged here!!! LOL

When I hear the phrases "non-gangsta-rap" and "anti-violence rap", I'm reminded of similar oxymorons like "white witches" or "Christian gays". The whole genre is saturated with violence. It is synonomous with it.

I guess you aren't familiar with Christian Rap artist then are you? This group was not one of them but go into any Christian bookstore and you will find several of them and ALL of their lyrics are dedicated to uplifting Jesus.

Jam Master Jay no "be 'illin'" any more.

Sad news. I actually enjoyed King of Rock and Raising Hell back in the day. The amazing thing is how the guys in Run DMC and LL Cool J, the most famous progenitors of early east coast hip hop, were actually Middle Class kids from southeast Queens, not "gangstas."

As much as I despise its current form, early rap was great! I think things started going downhill with 2 Live Crew (STOOPID) and NWA (West Coast Gansta BS) in the early 90s. Flame away homies, but that's my opinion.

Either way, I am sure you have already condemned Led Zep to hell for all their fornicating and what not.

Clemenza condemns "f--kin' Led Balloon" not for fornication, but for the unpardonable sin of musical masteurbation. Emerson Lake & Palmer, Yes, Genesis and other Brit rockers of the early-mid 70s were also guilty.

You are the uneducated and misinformed one if you think Run DMC are "black gangsta rapists". BTW, why include the adjective "black" in there? Are you a racist or something?

No one asked you to conform to today's music, and no one certainly asked you to allow anything to enter your household. People are just pointing out your ignorant generalization that all rappers are evil gangsters. Bet you don't know or care that one member of Run DMC is an ordained minister.

I am assuming you know absolutely nothing about Run DMC. If that is correct, then you also have no clue to how big a jerk you are making of yourself by equating them to "gangsta rap".

"Some of us are vehemently against the destructive culture of death and relativism and choose not to be a part of it."

You know absolutely nothing about Run DMC, yet you are willing and able to label them as a "culture of death and relativism"? At least when I talk about a subject, I try to know what I am speaking about.
