Carson storms out of scheduled debate By Mary Beth Schneider

U.S. Rep. Julia Carson stunned a Northwestside audience today when she stormed out of a debate after she accused her Republican challenger of running the most "repulsive" campaign she had ever faced.

Carson, a Democrat seeking her fourth term representing Indianapolis in Congress, was to take part in the Meridian Hills Kiwanis Club debate with Republican Brose McVey and Libertarian Andy Horning.

Instead, she said she wouldn't stay on the same stage with McVey and left the meeting room at the Holiday Inn Select North.

"If I seem rather upset, you are looking at somebody who is extremely hurt by this campaign," Carson said. "I don't think I have ever in my life seen the political decay, the lowest common denominator, that has been applied by my Republican opponent in this particular race. I don't feel comfortable being in the same room with him."

Carson claimed there is a "whispering campaign" that she is anti-Semitic -- a charge McVey said he knew absolutely nothing about. She also suggested racism was behind the unflattering use of her photos.

The Democrat also cited ads by the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) that attack her for paying property taxes late. She cited the terminal illness of her mother as a reason for at least some of the delinquent payments.

Records in the Marion County treasurer's office show Carson has repeatedly been late paying property taxes, but is currently up to date.

McVey defended the tone of his campaign as focusing on issues.

He said media reports have shown the accuracy of the NRCC ad. He took responsibility for the ads done on his behalf, he said, but added that while he wouldn't have chosen to bring the topic of Carson's taxes into the campaign, he had no control over what other Republicans say.

I certainly didn't mean to introduce race into that equation at all. I find some black women to be very hot. To pick an odd couple, I find both Condi Rice and Congresswoman McKinney to be hot.

Talk about projection! Liberals truly hate themselves, and are thus delusional and unfit to hold elected office.

That is Indianapolis Mayor Bart Peterson behind Julia. He is actually a pretty decent sort for a Rat. She is a train wreck of a human being and as dishonest as they come. Brose McVey has run a stunningly effective campaign in the historically liberal seventh district. His primary weapon has been the truth. Carson has been typically nonchalant and probably just figured out that McVey is within the margin of fraud in the redrawn district (which is about 30% less liberal now). The National Committee thinks Brose might be a winner here, and Cheney is scheduled to stump from Brose in Indianapolis on Friday to try to push him over the top. We all win BIG as Americans if this communist thug is sent packing.

Carson ranks among Congress’ biggest spenders

Oct 25, 2002

INDIANAPOLIS - Rep. Julia Carson would have spent over $816 billion in the First Session of the 107th Congress, if all legislation that she sponsored or co-sponsored had passed, according to a report released by the nonpartisan National Taxpayers Union Foundation.

“At a time of fiscal concern we need prudent, efficient, and creative leaders. Carson obviously cares little of Hoosier’s financial hardships, and just wants to make government bigger, and create more spending - instead of focusing on lowering taxes and creating more financial benefits for Hoosier families,” Kittle said.

Nationwide, only 20 more representatives would have spent more than Rep. Carson. Of the 20 Congressman who proposed more spending than Carson, were the most liberal members of Congress, including Jim McDermott and David Bonior who went to Iraq to meet with Saddam Hussein to protest President Bush’s position on the war.

In Indiana, she surpassed the next closest congressional representative in proposed spending by nearly $790 billion. Baron Hill (D) was the closest congressman in proposed spending with $26.83 billion. Rep. Carson surpassed Hill by 3000%.

“Of all Hoosiers in congress, Julia Carson is the biggest spender – and no one even came close,” Kittle pointed out.

The National Taxpayers Union Foundation also released its ratings of U.S. Representatives in the First Session of the 107th Congress based on every vote that significantly affects taxes, spending, debt, and regulatory burdens on consumers and taxpayers. The “Taxpayer Score” measures the strength of support for reducing spending and regulation and opposing higher taxes.

Rep. Carson received a grade of “F”.

As the lowest ranking official in the state, finishing with a score of 10 percent, the National Taxpayers Union Foundation classifies Rep. Carson as a big spender.

In fact, Rep. Carson voted for every tax increase proposed under the Clinton administration, but; has voted against every tax cut proposed since President Bush took office.

“It is shameful for Congresswoman Carson to rank among the worst spenders in congress,” Kittle commented. “Like a kid in a candy store, Carson has showed little restraint, and little to no discretion when voting for spending increases. Thank goodness there are enough people in Congress who disagree with Julia, or we would be in a world of financial hurt.”

The National Taxpayers Union Foundation is a nonpartisan group that promotes itself as a representative of the overburdened American taxpayer. More information about the organization and its detailed reports is available at: http://www.ntu.org.

Have you a source for the photos that she is complaining about?

It's becoming a common occurrence for Democrats to turn tail and run.

No. Since I have never seen a flattering photo of her, it defies imagination as to what she might think to be unflattering.

"Should those not pleasing to the eye be estopped from office? I am not pleased with the FR tendency to over-emphasize appearance."

I agree, as long as we can keep Maxine Waters and Hillary on our ugly list. Beauty may be only skin deep, but with those two, ugly goes all the way to the bone.

She also suggested racism was behind the unflattering use of her photos.

Is racism behind the Democrat media using the most unflattering pictures of Presidential candidate Bush it could find? CNN, CBS, NBC, and PBS before 9/11 all used the "dork" picture of Bush, where he is in the middle of pronouncing a word. Now they use their second string, stand by picture, that is simply unflattering.

I have never seen them put up any of the myriad of wonderful photos of the President that exist.

No, it's not racism, it's PARTISANSHIP! "If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen," quote Democrat Harry Truman.

Well, lady, if you r mom has a terminal illness... what are you doing running for office? taking care of someone with such an illness is a full-time job.

And if she's already passed away, don't you think it better if you sat this one out, rest up a bit from all that caregiving, and then get a real job with real pay? It beats gambling on a political job. Make sure you have some savings before you run for office, make sure you can make it through a debate without bursting into tears...?

Or did you plan getting political office for the sake of easy kickbacks and bribes?

she's just honked off because this will be the first time she ever had to work since assuming the downtown throne

LOL, most of her 'work' will include manufacturing votes. We REALLY need to make sure that there is a GOP presence in EVERY precinct in Marion County this Tuesday. Is anyone organizing that effort?
