Michael Bellesiles, the history professor who wrote that firearms were rare in early America, has resigned from Atlanta's Emory University after an investigation found he "willingly misrepresented the evidence"in his award-winning book.

I think this is unfair to come down so hard on an author that has gathered such a grand following with his fictional accounts.

Bellesiles benefited enormously from his controversial specialty.

Anyone really think a history prof his age would ever have had a mass-market book - had he specialized in the kind of topics history profs usually do? Anyone think that he'd have gotten all the free publicity for that book from the "mainstream" media, had it instead been a history of the corset industry in New York?

Also, the guy'd have been fired long ago - as soon as his fraud became evident - were it not for the political implications.

Scandals of antigun politicians - with how-to guide to "outing!"

It's nice to see the truth revealed. We can only hope that it will be publicized widely to shame those who hate our rights and freedoms. Unfortunately, the media will likely bury it as deeply as it can.

So it is, my mistake.

However, it's really a pain in the ass to search for previous postings when the original headline has been completely altered, rather than parenthetically modified. For example...

Professor "Quits" After Anti-Gun Book Found Fraudulent

Parentheticals don't interfere with the "exact phrase" FR search function, as can be seen here:

Professor quits in probe of gun book

Good. Debunk the Marxist propaganda machine. We could use more of this.

Sure, Bellisle benefited enormously in the short run, including all kinds of fellowships, royalties, and prestigious prizes. But in the long run I venture to think he is washed up.

Where is he going to get his next job? I'll be very surprised if any history department will risk the flak of hiring him. Some kinds of controversial academics are hireable and some are not. I think he's one of the latter. He'll have to find some other line of work, and I doubt it will be as cushey as the professoriat.

"exaggeration of data." Scholarly criticism indeed: how can one exaggerate the data? Manipulate, perhaps, but not exaggerate.

And, there is nothing wrong with "random" gathering of data: in fact, this is quite scientific; it's called random sampling. These "scholars" speak of this is if it were a self-evident falsehood.

But then, we are dealing with historians, where "research" has an altogether different connotation.

He still has this professional review of his work over on Amazon.

Bellesiles, who is highly knowledgeable about weapons and military history, never comes out against guns. He is more interested in discovering the truth than in taking sides. Nevertheless, his work shatters some time-honored myths and icons--including the usual reading of the Second Amendment--and will be hard to refute. This fascinating, eye-opening account is sure to both inform and inflame the already highly charged debate about guns in America.

Hey M1911, you need to print this artical out and tape it inside the cover of your copy. Someone might pick that book up at a later date when you are not around and they wouldnt know the truth about this guys "research".

If you read the source material, you will agree that what Mr. Bellesiles engaged in was far from "random sampling" both in intent and in effect, and therefore the conclusions that he tortured out of the data were anything but scientific.
