Stunned by Sen. Paul Wellstone's death, shaken state Democrats tried to decide who might replace him in a race that could decide control of the U.S. Senate.

Secretary of State Mary Kiffmeyer said the law allows the party to nominate a new candidate to run in Wellstone's spot. She declined to address other details, including how absentee ballots already filled out would be handled.

Within the next seven days, the Minnesota Democratic Party must name the person whose name will appear on the ballot instead of Wellstone’s. State law requires that new special ballots be printed and that the candidates’ names on the regular ballot be blotted out.
Minnesota Attorney General Mike Hatch, a Democrat, told reporters Friday that Wellstone’s name “will not be on the general election ballot” since it will be blotted out. “It is to the advantage of the Democratic Party, or for any political party in this circumstance, to nominate (a replacement) as soon as possible,” Hatch said, adding that next Thursday would be the last day the party could pick a new candidate and still be able to get his or her name on absentee ballots that will be mailed to voters who can’t get to the polls.
Hatch also said if the Minnesota Democratic Party simply does nothing, Wellstone still cannot be elected posthumously. According to Republican campaign election lawyer Craig Engle, the Democrats could not place Wellstone’s name on the new ballot because he is dead and thus ineligible to hold office.

You are anticipating a huge write in campaign? The Dems must name a replacement.

Not only do they have to replace him if they hope to have a chance, the law also says that absentee ballots will not be reprinted, and any absentee ballots cast for Wellstone, will be counted for Wellstone, not for the new candidate!

AND, absentee ballots are one of the principle avenues for dimo vote fraud...

Smokin' this. Our very own "National Socialists" are helping to get out the vote (fraud) up in the Land O' Lakes, for their now-deceased hero.

Agree and a big bump.

The last thing the rats want to do is lose one of their best liberals. A sad and real tragedy for the Wellstone family and close friends.

Meanwhile, I'll bet Tommy Daischle is wearing his depends right now.

AND, they lose out on their most profitable avenue for vote fraud -- the absentee ballots!

Rebecca Yanisch, Gov. Jesse Ventura's trade commissioner and the loser in the state's 2000 U.S. Senate primary, indicated she might be interested.

That's sick. What a vulture.

Jump to conclusions?

1) The Rats stole the Senatorial election in Mo. in 2000, in part via voter fraud and in part via a PLANE CRASH, and a dead man being elected.

2) The Rats tried to steal the Presidential election in 2000, and only by the grace of God did they not succeed.

3) The Rats appear to have stolen (barring the miracle of NJ voters waking up!) the NJ Senatorial election this year.

4) The Rats in Hawaii manipulated a US Rep. on life support, in a move that even angered the late candidate's duaghter who derided, in her own words, "forces that seemed to be interested in ensuring an outcome that was more favorable, than in assuring that the people have a full say in the matter."

I have become so jaded that in recent years that nothing would surprise me at this point. I believe that the Rats would sell out our very nation for political gain. Oh wait, Clinton already did. Don't put anything past these scum. They are the most vile creatures on earth.

I was about to ask if Michael Rivero and his gang have come up with a conspiracy theory to explain it all yet. :o)

I got so tired of arguing with Rivero that I did just that. I “invented” a couple of conspiracies and you can see that some folks fell for it.

You are correct. This election is the regular election for the seat. The person elected is scheduled to take the seat Jan 3, 2003. This is not a special election, like the one in Missouri, where the winner could be seated "immediately." Of course, the final arbiter of Senate membership is the Senate. So, conceivably, they could seat the winner of the November election early if they so desired.

I heard that on Fox! I don't think it's fair, but I can't think of a "fair" way to replace a candidate four days before an election. It basically gives a pretty big boost to Coleman and blunts one of the Dems biggest election fraud weapons.

Why would a replacement from Ventura only serve until election day. That is not what is supposed to happen. He should serve out Wellstones term which is until the end of the year. Are the RATS going to break yet another law? Or were those I heard today wrong?

I guess lib/dems never die, they just get replaced with a more likely to win candidate.

I also wonder if there is such a thing as a 'sympathy vote' for a dead Republican?

Yes but she was appointed to fill a vacant term which began on Jan 3, 2001...... She wasn't appt to finish out the term of Ashcroft. Whoever is appt here would be to finish out the Wellstone term of the 107th Congress, not to fill the duly elected Senator for the 108th. Minnesota law provides for a replacement candidate on the ballot for this upcoming election.
