Free Republic's Technical Problems

Of late, FR seems plagued with slowdowns. Is this a temporary problem or is some limit being approached?

When I couldn't get on FR yesterday afternoon and wanted more information on Senator Wellstone, I paid a visit to DU (ackkk!). They were very mad at the "evil, evil, evil" FReepers....they posted a LINK to FR for everyone to come over here to see what we were saying about the senator. That must have had something to do with the problem.

There aren't enough DUmmies to produce 150 hits per second. :P

test. TEST? Test this!
I'm back, but only now that I've read everything on Drudge's Reference Desk.
Didn't know there were that many newspapers out there!

That's true - you have a point!

I've never visited the DU site. I guess I figure enough of them are posting on Free Republic that I get the jist of their opinions without entering their turf.
And if that's not enough, I can listen to any radio station, tune in to any TV channel, or read any newspaper for their version of news and information.
Come to think of it, maybe that's why the DU-ers come here, to FR; they can't get the real news and accurate information anywhere else, either.
Praise God for the Robinsons
and for Free Republic!

I quite literally went through withdrawals last night.
This morning.......Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

We're talking about offloading the search engine and its own database onto another machine. That's what I did. It just made more sense especially when the main machine is already doing enough. Better yet, just kill the link on the refresh when the traffic goes up.

Since we are not financially able to contribute (the recession is REAL in the industrial Midwest...) please take this for what it's worth.
It may be interesting to run a news-headline indicating when the Internet itself is having trouble. While FR has been seemingly stable through the last 10 days, this AM the 'net as a whole seemed to DIE beginning around 0630 Central Standard.
Since FR is a major source of news and since ALL FR members use the Internet by definition, perhaps an "internet meter" showing red for SLLLOOOOOWWWW, orange for Not Too Fast, yellow for Passable, and Green for "Normal" would be useful.
THAT will keep people from assuming that FR is down or slow when in fact it is the Internet itself.

Try
here for a site that does that. Adding such a meter from an outside site might slow down FR.

Beta and cable here. At least I can pretend that things are moving.
I feel for those on dial up.
THAT DOES IT!!! I'm being forced to switch from dial-up to cable because some horny Unknown creature continues to fell me up !!!

Take the plunge, Geek. It is wonderful to sit down at the computer and have links just pop up instantly no matter how many images freepers post on a thread. And life is grand when you always have a connection. Think about Election Day. Don't you want to see all the drama as it unfolds?
</imitation of modem trying to dial up for the third time> I'll wait until next time to mention laptop and wireless. ; )

I will second the request for a 'Cliff's Notes' version of the technology. Not being an initiate (only a "click-and-drool" type,) but curious, such would be helpful.
Thanks.

Houston, we have another problem with the database. Kindly take a look at the My Comments self-search (a sample of mine is included to illustrate the problem).
|
It looks like I've lost count of how many replies are in a thread, but only with self-search. Other types of search correctly state how many replies are on a thread. |
To: John Robinson
Er, never mind. It cleared up.
To: John Robinson
We were getting upto 150 hits/sec this afternoon. We usually get about 30-40. On top of that, the database server has been having a bad day all its own, and I can tell you the extra traffic did not help that situation.
Ever hear of clustering?
