Can't say. To come up with that wording by chance is more far fetched to me. He was being arrogant and saying that even if they did catch him, it would come back and haunt them ... he'd fly away.

That was my thought as well. It is possible that Mohammed and accomplice switched cars with the real shooters, and switched back immediately after each shootings, the rifle remaining in the car all the time. Far fetched, but makes the metaphor make more sense. Even looks like Mohammed deliberately set himself up for a quick capture, almost like McVeigh.
Time will tell, but if the metaphor is going to play out, Mohammed and accomplice will skate on the actual murders, though no doubt be nailed as accomplices.
