String of suspects could just as well mean that they are going through a list of individual suspects, for example ex-snipers who have gone unaccounted for, etc. Too early to know for sure.

At one point, somebody on my tv said string of suspects in conjunction with search warrants all over the country. It doesn't sound like much standing alone to say "string of suspects". Somebody ratted out MORE THAN ONE POTENTIAL SUSPECT.
