Not sure, but Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle nuked it in Footfall
Footfall was good, but Lucifer's Hammer, by the same authors was better. I always wondered what would happen if a cubic mile of hot fudge sundae hit the earth at cometary speeds. ;)
