My husband and I are seriously considering getting shooting lessons for the family. We have two boys, 9 and 11. We would of course eventually get a gun, however, no matter how much I would lock it up, I still have the fear that my kids or their friends would get ahold of it. If something terrible would happen, I would not be able to forgive myself.

My idea of a politically incorrect T-shirt would be someone (symbolizing the public) getting really angry at the sniper? And the sniper (symbolizing the sniper) making a face at him? But the person getting mad is getting out a gun, and the police mistake him for the real sniper and shoot him? And the people get all angry and stuff, because they (the police) shot the wrong man (innocent)? And riots ensue, which goes to show why they should go ahead and just pick up this bad guy now so there won't be anymore killing.

Could someone please make that T-shirt design for me I'll split the profits thank you very much.

from this sniper mess was sick, Now if all the proceeds were going to
the fund for victims or reward, you would have a heck of a lot of attention.
unfortunately you probably want to make a buck, understandable, but will not reach a very big market.

That is a great point. I would not be extorting on peoples fears though. I would be helping build their resilience. I do not own a T-shirt business and would not think it would be a million dollar industry. All proceeds could go to families if an investor contributed the money to make the shirts.

You know, I've often wondered how many pioneer children shot themselves or their friends while playing with their daddy's rifle or pistol.

There are many methods of securing firearms, but the most critical is teaching firearm safety. If your kids are taught properly you should not have any problems.

That said, I believe kids have a higher risk of being killed in an automobile accident than with a gun in their own homes. Would this stop you from teaching your kids how to drive?

That is a good question, but probably not as many as you think. Children back then grew up with guns and they were more of a necessity for feeding themselves, etc. My husband was in the military and his job was to look after (clean, etc) the weapons, so he is very family with fire arms.

I lived for 8 years in the DC area and now live in Richmond.

My family and friends are living through this nightmare. Sure the odds are slim that one of us will be hit, but I've frequented all of the Virginia locations.

Nice you can laugh about it in Florida, but as a father who sent the kids back to school today, I think it's in bad taste.

I would like to get your opinion for a T-shirt promotion I have. I would call it "snipe this" and t-shirts would have a picture of crosshairs on it with:

Although your fears are well grounded, accidental shootings involving children are easily preventable.

My three children have been raised shooting a wide variety of weapons and as a result, the mysticisim regarding weapons is no longer there. A very useful lesson is to take a pumpkin/watermellon to the range and let them shoot it with a large caliber handgun. Once they watch it blow apart, sit down and discuss that the effects would be similar on a "human" target. This should be coupled with a strict "scared straight" lesson in gun safety. Consistent safety follow-ups should follow on a regular basis. Involve you children in the cleaning process of te weapons so the children get a clear understanding of how the weapon works. This goes a long way in the "but the magazine wasn't in the gun" and "I didn't think it was loaded" accidents.

Additionally, invest in a gun safe. Reasonably priced gun safes that prevent little curious handscan be purchased for around $100.00......More serious burgular proof ones are much more expensive and thats your option.

You make very good points. We will most likely teach them all they need to know, then tell them never to touch it/them! Then, my husband, who I think is right on this, says that if I have to use the gun, make sure I kill him so he can't come back and sue! There is so much to think about. I don't like having to make this decision. Before 9/11, it could be argued that gun ownership was more of a personal perferrence. Now, I feel that more people, like me, feel that it is fast becoming a necessity.

Do you seriously think that I believe the killings are a laughing matter! I am insulted. I have children of my own and if you think it didn't cut to the quick when Moose announced his last statement then you can kiss my Ass! You must be the same guy that had the movies and video games take out images of the twin towers because "WE" Americans just couldn't take it!

It's scared people who refuse to stand up to these jerks that makes their sick plans work oh so much better! I may be in Florida but if I did live in D.C. I would be walking the streets with this shirt handing them out for free at Gas stations!

I'm sorry you are in fear for your children. I do understand that feeling! That is no reason to look at defiance of these evil acts as laughing at the victims.
