I'll say Oak just to be contoversial (Geez, maybe I can be a junior Media speculator).

In our neck of the woods, we find the target boards still attached to the trees.

we still have a number of species left

We don't have a lot of Oaks here...

As a local I would guess an evergreen.... either Douglas fir or Cedar.
