Lackawanna six plead innocent

BUFFALO, N.Y., Oct. 22 (UPI) -- The six Lackawanna, N.Y., men accused of belonging to a terrorist cell pleaded innocent Tuesday in U.S. District Court.

The charges were originally based on a criminal complaint filed by an FBI agent with the Joint Terrorism Task Force of Western New York on Sept. 13. The next step in the legal process was a grand jury indictment.

Faysal Galab, 26, Shafal Mosed, 24, Yasein Taher, 24, Yahya Goba, 25, Mukhtar al-Bakri, 22, and Sahim Alwan, 29, "together and with others known and unknown to the grand jury, did knowingly and unlawfully combine, conspire, confederate and agree to provide material support and resources to a foreign terrorist organization, namely al Qaida," the indictment said. If convicted, the men face up to 15 years in prison.

"We didn't expect the government would give us the opportunity to cross-examine even one of their witnesses in a preliminary hearing so we are not surprised at all that they circumvent that opportunity by returning that indictment," said defense attorney Rodney Personius.

The six are accused of attending an Osama bin Laden terrorist training camp in Afghanistan in 2001, and prosecutors assert that that constitutes providing material support to al Qaida under the Anti-Terrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act of 1996.

"It is our position, as it has always been, that they engaged in activities that are in violation of the statute referenced in the indictment; we submitted the proof," said U.S. Attorney Michael Battle. "The grand jury considered it, the grand jury obviously agreed and returned an indictment."

All of the defendants, with the exception of Alwan, have been ordered held without bail. Alwan is still being detained pending his ability to meet stringent bail conditions by U.S. Magistrate H. Kenneth Schroder Jr.

Alwan had cooperated with the FBI and admitted to federal agents that he and others were in the al Farooq training camp from April to June 2001. He also told agents that he wanted to leave the training camp in Afghanistan but was not allowed to do so. But in his second week there, he faked an ankle injury and was then allowed to leave, he said.

Al-Bakri had also admitted to the FBI that the group had attended al Farooq.

Under the bail conditions, Alwan would be freed, but he must be at home 24 hours a day except for appearances at court, at his job or to seek medical attention. He must not have access to faxes, computers or the Internet. He must pay $20 a day for a global positioning system to monitor his movements by satellite.

"Based on the bail conditions -- he can't use the phone, the Internet or a computer -- we sent him a certified letter last week that he is not able to perform his job requirements under the bail terms so he is no longer employed," Frank Williams, the director of the Iroquois Job Training Center in Medina, N.Y., told United Press International.

James Harrington, Alwan's attorney, said his client's family is still working on getting the $600,000 together for bail.

The men were being investigated in the summer of 2001, before the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, after the FBI received information from a member of the Yemeni community in Lackawanna that "a number of individuals had attended and participated in terrorism training in Afghanistan." The six defendants are of Yemeni descent.

The FBI investigated, but the men initially denied going to Afghanistan and said they had gone to Pakistan to learn more about Islam.

The attorneys for the defendants have said that their clients had expected to attend religious training in Islam in Pakistan and were duped into attending the terrorist training camp.

They describe their clients as "good Americans" -- all were born in America -- who had no plans to put anything they may have learned in Afghanistan into practice.

"Key paragraph: "Investigators also recovered a rifle with a telescope and a cassette entitled "A Call for Jihad" at Al-Bakri's home."

. . .guess the Media 'talking heads' think it would be irresponsible to go here. . .

Better, to theorize on the pattern of the non-pattern. . .calculated vs the random. . .et al. . .

I've always thought there is an excellent chance al Qaeda is involved. And if not them someone from another group that is an equally vicious assemblage of murderers, car-jackers, rapists, and thieves: a democrat.

Don't forget Earth First!, PETA, DNC, etc.

PS: My quess is al queda or al queda wannabe.

ellery: "The cell's leader was found with a rifle/scope:"

------

There was an article about AQ training video: http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=28819

Excerpt:

The training video shows al-Qaida operatives practicing the following kinds of assaults:

using pickup trucks with shooters concealed in the bed of the trucks;

using motorcycles as a shooting platform for drive-bys and assassinations;

execution of prisoners;

ambushes of law-enforcement officers;

residential assassinations;

assassination on a golf course using a rocket-propelled grenade and rifle fire;

drive-up kidnapping of target walking on a street;
use of tunnels, storm drains and sewers for infiltration during urban raids;

rappelling from rooftops of buildings to make entry on upper floors;

use of motorcycles for grenade attacks;

and
raids on buildings with large numbers of occupants – perhaps schools or office buildings.

Analysts point out that all scenarios involving prisoners and hostages ended in execution. None included plans for negotiated settlements for escape by terrorists.

"They plan to kill the prisoners and die in place," wrote Holschen.

The "perfect day" as seen by al-Qaida would combine attacks designed to produce a maximum number of casualties with attacks that would give them the opportunity to get "face time" on the news channels to deliver their rhetoric, explained Holschen.

"The major take-home lesson here is that although the enemy is known to be seeking the ability and opportunity to use weapons of mass destruction and of an unconventional nature, such as hijacked airliners, they are also spending a lot of time training to carry out attacks the old-fashioned way – attacks executed by small groups of dedicated personnel equipped with little more than small arms," explained Holschen.

Hostages, prisoners and anyone else identified as a target or problem by al-Qaida terrorist operatives will be killed, say those who viewed the tape. There is no point in complying with orders, they say. Those who do not resist ultimately will be rewarded with ritual execution in front of television cameras, according to the tactics and techniques captured on this video.

In one scenario on the video, terrorists pretend to be stranded on a six-lane highway, their vehicle disabled. When a police officer stops to assist, the driver blows his horn. Another occupant of the vehicle opens fire on the police officer with a rifle. In other scenarios, shooters were concealed in the trunk of the car. When the terrorists were picked up by accomplices in a getaway car, the original vehicle was blown up, apparently to destroy evidence.

In another scenario, an innocuous-looking terrorist knocks on the door of a residence, standing in view of the resident and answering questions through a closed door. When the resident opens the door, the terrorist immediately draws his weapon and fires, emptying his weapon into the victim.

In the golf course assassination, the target was on the green, near the hole. A rocket-propelled grenade is fired at a vehicle adjacent to the green, perhaps a security detail. Then the target of the assassination is killed with rifle fire.

When asked if these techniques are intended for use in the U.S., one military intelligence operative said without hesitation, "Yes."

I'm thinking a new world order government operative sounds more likely than Al Quaeda. However, who knows.

They're going to use it to further weaken the second amendment, to instill terror in the population, so that more of our rights can be pulled out from under us. They'll feed us a load of hogwash to provide a fascade of the global interests and the scrapping of the constitution that is going on under the scene. Meanwhile, there's the promotion of the globalist system while our "leaders" are black-mailed or manipulated to sign "Homeland Security" or "War on Terror" legislation, all to not appear non-caring of tragic events of September 11.

I think the sniper may be Al Queda...70 percent probability in my mind. The Portland OR cell being caught practcing shooting is too much coincidence for me.

Isn't Moose from Portland? Makes me wonder if there is an Oregon connection there?

Very probable...al Qaida may be behind the financing of these attacks. That is one of their primary objectives - to sow confusion/fear into the hearts of the infidels while killing them. The goal remains --- An Islamic America
