The code of civalry in one form or another has been with us for thousands of years. It traces back to the fundamentals of conduct. Such as you don't have sex with another man's woman. The ministral thing is a whole seperate issue.

It is not naiveness. It is just good manners for an otherwise uncivilized world. The woman who would reject a courtesy tells as much about herself as the man who opens the door. It defines her and what society in general should think of her. (and how little she is worth)

A knight calls his best friend over and hands him a key. "I shall be off to war, and if I don't return in 4 years, use this key to give my wife her freedom and let her live a happy life." His best friend with sorrowful eyes assures him of his wishes and bids the knight farewell. Twenty minutes down the road, the Knight sees a cloud of dust to his rear, and his friend is galloping upon him at a high rate of speed. He says, "You gave me the wrong key!"
