The reason the schools were closed is because in the communications with the sniper with the police he threatened to kill school children if his demands were not met.

Sheriff's deputizing local citizens is not a police state. Arming local citizens is the anti-thesis of a police state. Get a grip.

Last year the chances of being killed by a sniper were even lower. Next year there will probably be snipers shooting in more than one city.
Say a sniper starts up where you live and the first victum is you, your wife or your kid? How will you feel then?

Many states have carry laws and they are not "police states" because of it.
States with carry laws have lower crime rates than states that don't.

When the people are finally completely disarmed, you will then be able to experience a true "police state".
