Forensic investigators connect shoe prints to brothers and tie a gun to the December 2000 killings of five people.
Forensic invesigator Gary Miller shows a shoe imprint found on a windshield sunshade that he said matches the sole of a shoe Jonathan Carr lost while running from police. The sunshade was found in the triplex where five people were terrorized.
A forensic lab examiner matched bullets to a gun and imprints to shoes worn by Reginald and Jonathan Carr.
The aim of Gary Miller's testimony Monday during the murder trial of the Carr brothers was to place both men and a .380-caliber black Lorcin pistol inside a triplex where intruders terrorized five people before taking them to a soccer field and shooting them, killing four.
As the third week of testimony began, Miller told the jury that tests turned up identical firing marks on bullets and cartridges recovered by police at three different crime scenes during December 2000.
Each time, the attackers left the evidence in incidents that all occurred within a 5-square-mile area.
After two men carjacked Andrew Schreiber and made him drive to three ATMs on Dec. 7, they left him stranded beside 43rd Street North just off Webb Road with the back tire shot out of his Ford Expedition.
During a search on Jan. 3, head homicide detective Ken Landwehr looked as his feet and saw a spent .380-caliber cartridge.
Ann Walenta reported being approached by a stranger who pointed a gun at her the night of Dec. 11 and shot her three times as she tried to drive away. Police found two bullets in Walenta's GMC Yukon and took another from her after she died Jan. 2, 2001, of complications from her wounds.
Bullets and casings were also left around the four who died, shot in the back of the head while kneeling Dec. 15 in a soccer field. They had been raped, robbed and beaten following a home invasion at 12727 E. Birchwood Drive. Another bullet fragmented when it bounced off a white plastic hair clip that saved the life of a woman, who ran a mile for help in the snow.
Miller matched the markings left by the gun barrel and the unique strikes on the cartridges by the firing pins. But he didn't have the gun until highway workers recovered it on March 19, 2001, near the off-ramp of K-96 and Greenwich Road -- just blocks from the soccer field. Then Miller was able to trace everything to the black Lorcin.
No evidence has directly put the gun in the hands of either defendant. The closest link so far came when Tronda Adams -- who saw Jonathan Carr almost daily during the week of the crimes -- testified last week that the gun looked like one she saw him carrying. But she said she's no expert on guns.
Instead, District Attorney Nola Foulston focused on the Carrs' feet.
Police found shoe prints on a box under Jason Befort's bed in the Birchwood triplex, where he lived with Aaron Sander and Brad Heyka. Investigators also found footprints on a tarp and cardboard windshield sunshade in the garage.
Miller said the dirty prints in the garage were similar to the tread on the bottom of Timberline shoes Jonathan Carr wore while running from police later that day. Miller said the prints on the cardboard box resembled the Buffalino shoes found at the apartment of Reginald Carr's girlfriend.
Stephanie Donley, who lived in the apartment where Reginald Carr was arrested, testified last week that she wasn't sure if the Buffalino shoes belonged to her boyfriend.
But Landwehr took the stand Monday to say that 45 minutes before her testimony, Donley positively identified the shoes as belonging to Reginald Carr.
Foulston and chief deputy Kim Parker are nearing the end of their case, which should wrap up this week with the results of DNA testing.

I have been following this story as much as is made known. I have also read the testimony/transcript of the only living victim. It is horrific!
