Thanks! Yes, it appears that Newsday printed this information. He was described as of Yugoslav origin, but it was noted that he would have to have French citizenship to serve in their military.

There were also reports that you automatically get French citizenship if you join the French military.

The French Defense Ministry spokesman said, "This soldier has a very, very good reputation as a marksman."

He was given permission to travel to Canada and the US for the month of August, he had plans to visit Chicago. He was described as 25 years old, they only released his first name, Georges. Apparently, he made cash withdrawals on his credit card on 2 Sept. somewhere in the US then disappeared. He is a French citizen, he may have some Yugoslavian heritage but according to the spokesman he spent some time in Yugoslavia as part of the peacekeeping force. No big surprise that friends have said he is somewhat secretive, a loner.
